Default What's in my engine?

Hello.. I am new to this site, but not cars and my intro thread is where it should be lol.. on to business... The engine in question is the engine in my 1970 Mustang Mach 1.. It is a 351 windsor and I am at a cross roads... car is being built and I am to where I am going to start building the engine... I am going for 450 - 500 HP and need advice on what the internals in a stock 351 windsor consist of and can accomplish.... I am planning on running AFR Heads, Vick Jr intake manifold, high energy cam... The issue I am having is if I will need to upgrade my rotating assembly or not... What can the stock rotating assembly handle ? I also will of course be getting the block checked so that goes with out saying....

Should I spring for the Forged rotating assembly with H beams or do I already have a good platform?

As far as I know you DO NOT have forged internals. Only the 03-04 Cobras came forged from the factory so I would upgrade. You are doing all this work already why not go the extra step and forge it so you can slap on a M112 or run a big shot of spray on it without having to worry. You dont want to have to tear it all down again when you blow the engine.

That was my thoughts, but I have also heard that the stock bottom end on these cars was pretty stout since it is a pre 74 block... supposedly has 4 bolt mains and etc.... Was just wondering if I could get away with spending 2K less as that is a big difference..... Anyone know the tollerances of the stock bottom end ?

You could get a stroker kit and make your HP goal, that should include new crank, pistons, and rods.

And I believe the 93 Cobra also came with forged or a material similar.

Just a stroker kit should put me at 450-500 HP??

I was thinking about going with this set up...

Rotating assembly

Cam shaft
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL35-426-8/

Heads.. Was going to go with the AFR 205's but they are twice the price and these I feel would serve me just as good...

Intake manifold..

Distributor
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-85805/

Coil
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8227/

MSD 6AL also....

From what I have seen. It will take me the parts that I have mentioned to get me to my goal....

Default 450HP

It you have an older block, it may have a FLAT TAPPET CAMSHAFT SETUP AND NOT ROLLER ROCKERS UNLESS CONVERTED. YOU CAN LEAVE THE CAM ALONE.

408 Stroker kit

AFR 185 185 185 185, NOT 205 NO NO NO NO NO NO, MADE THAT MISTAKE ON A 408, THING WAS A SLOW DOG ON TAKE OFF.

LONG TUBE HEADERS.

That's all you need Easy 450 HP 450 torque

Don't be concerned with HP, torque is whee its at, and what you will get FAST.

The block is a 1970... How do I know if it has the flat tappet Cam? Also what stroker kit?

The reason I ask how to tell is because when I bought the 6 years ago.. the guy said that he had just put a new cam and lifters in it.... on the drive home.. Given the car sat for a long time.. it was pretty slow from what I remember....Hopefully though he went back with the original cam and didn't try to upgrade.. but if I have a POS cam. I guess that gives me an excuse to run the one I had picked out... Also this intake manifold being the stock one doesn't seem to me like it would flow enough to even use the AFR's? I got a number off the intake but don't know how to refference it...

Ok so after a little research I have found all the specs for my engine in its stock form... For those who are into this sort of thing and for my future ease of access to these numbers I'm going to list them.... However there is one thing that is interesting about my motor.. As I referenced the original intake manifold number to my source.. all the numbers and letters match except one and that is the last letter.. The 351W's I have found listed are all 2V's no 4V's. The 2V manifold has a last letter designation of (C or F). My intake manifold has an (E) Designation which after research is the correct designation for the 1969 and 1970 4V Intake manifold.. Can'ts find any HP or torque numbers for the 351W 4V, but seems other than the intake everything else motor wise is the same as the 2V.. For my goals it seems the cam may be a little weak to keep it stock.. The heads seem to be decent though if they had some work done to them..... Anyway..
