A four barrel has four venturies or barrels as they are called somtimes. Look down the throat of a carb and you see what I mean.

Is there a benefit of having 4 over lets say 2???....If I had to guess I would say more air flow but not sure??? And this 4 barrel stuff only apply's to carburateted cars obviously right?

Correct more air flow, carbs come in sizes measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute) the carb needs to be matche dto the engine size, go too big and you lose power.

and TBI (throttle body injection) which is pretty much a carburetor with a fuel injector in each "barrel".

also 4 barrels is not always faster...i had a 82 stang with a 2 barrell on it...i swaped it out for a 4 barrel( stock intake) and the car slowed down 7tenths . so i made a bet to my cousin that it was a problem some where else and not the carb -intake...so i put the old carb intake back on and it picked that e.t back up...i guess the motor was using as much air -fuel it need and the 4 barrel just added more than it used causing it to slow down

Did you use an adapter to fit the 4 barrel carb on the 2 barrel intake? Because that will choak your air flow badly. Also what size 4 barrel was it and was it tuned right, if done correctly it should have made more power but not much if the engine was all stock.

it you would have used a holley 450 with the air hone milled and some tuning it would have picked up a few .10ths
