Default Exhaust question...

I read in the V6 forum about exhaust and what type of mufflers and someone brought up the point of why even get mufflers? Why not just get trual duals but straight pipes with no mufflers? Anyone know why or have sugg. why or why not?

Well, it's not street legal and will probally sound like crap. Plus you need back pressure and straight pipes won't give that to you.

Maybe it is in your state. It will be over the legal noise limit.

if you live in a city, you probably still need to meet emission standards as well, straight pipes = no cats. plus...what blueangelfgthr said ^^^^^^^^^^

If you put on the cats then that defeats the whole point of having them. Are we talking about a full exhaust of straight pipes or just the cat back? If it's just the catback you can keep the cats.

Most states require mufflers, no matter how quiet the car is without them., Some look past it, but if you pi** of a cop, he's gonna check..and you get the ticket

LOL Im not sure what were talking about. Can someone explain "catback" exactly??? But I was just talking about the setup of from the headers immediatly the cats, one for each side then straight pipes all the way to the tips, thats what I was talking about.

about the muffler thing. there was a HUGE discussion/argument in early aug. about the laws. legally you have to have mufflers on your car. they dont have to be stock, but they have to be there. the catback thing is like this. "catback" refers to the section of exhaust that is directly behind the pipe(s) that the catalytic converter(s) is part of. a catback system has the flow tubes (on fox bodies, that go from the h/x pipe to the actual mufflers), the mufflers, and the tailpipes (that go from the mufflers to the back of the car, what u can see). for emmisions reasons, your best bet is to keep the catted pipes and put them on for inspection. the mufflers need to be there anyway.
