GT40P vs. Cobra vs. ???
Hey guys, looking for opinions on stock Ford engine components.
Going to be getting a fox body in late winter/early spring, and immediately afterwards going to start building a cheapy turbo, well built 306/T5 setup. I do NOT want to use anything but true Ford cores for intake, heads and block...call me a purist, haha. My question lies in this: are GT40P offerings the best as I've been told?
I have always been told that GT40P heads/intake when ported/polished flow better than Cobra heads/intakes. Is this true? Anyone have any experience? Dyno sheets? Also, are there any specific year of 5.0 blocks that are better than others? Most of my expertise lies with elder stangs/parts, so I definitely appreciate the help guys. I thought about doing a Boss style engine but I want it to be fairly period correct, again, call me a purist.
Also, is there anything other than GT40P/Cobra that was used when the 5.0 reigned supreme?
Thanks again guys!
Craig

93-95 Cobra's had what's called GT40 heads. 96 through early 97 Explorer's with the 302 HO also have them. Late 97 through 98 had the GT40P which had slightly smaller combustion chambers. The only drawback to the P heads is the spark plugs come straight out as opposed to an angle for the early GT40's. They ignite in the combustion chamber better since the electrode is in the center but it's harder to find headers that will bolt up to it. Ford Racing sells GT40X heads today, they're around $600 a piece. You can find used GT40 heads and they run from $500 to $600 for a pair.
