Hey guys,

first off, there's no sound like a Mustang sound! Love 'em. Always been a fan. I'm a fairly young guy, 21, college student. I ride motorcycles but first love has always been cars.

Anyway, my car has about 250k miles now, Toyota FTW! Looking to get a new car though on a limited budget. I could maybe spend $7-8k or so.

I have a question about GT's. If I were to get one as a daily, what MPG would I expect to get? Normal driving, pound it a little every now and then. 35 city/65 highway type of deal. I know I can get MPG anywhere, but I want to hear from owners.

Would help even more if I hear from those in NY and similar type of climates like me.

Also, $7-8k would garner maybe a 2002 or 2001 ish Mustang GT (no problem with me - I like the 99-04 style). Probably there would be about 90k or 100k miles on it. Is that too much you think for a used GT? Would the power be suffering and performance/mpg suffering drastically? What do you guys think? Not a wise choice?

Your gonna get 17-21 mpg w a well running car, 21 on long highway trips only. Expect closer to the 17 mpg. I'm getting this w/ my current set up.

You should be able to find a decent 03"-04' for $7-$8.

 

And regarding the mileage..do you believe its cause for concern in buying a 10 year old GT with 100k miles ish? Is performance affected greatly?

 

100k is barely broken in. Your gonna have normal 10 yr old car issues like brake pads & normal wear items. Im still on my stock clutch @ 90+k.

Bought mine with 140k(had the hook up, bought from a buddy for $1500) always liked the new edge mustangs . I think you'll fall in love after a test drive buddy. Like syndicate said, just do it.

 

Cheers, all. New here and have a tech question. A good friend of mine has been having a problem with his 2005 V6 Mustang dying while parked or driving for no apparent or obvious reason. No pattern of driving or not driving to pinpoint a cause; checked and changed fuel tank cap, ran an OBD2 in the past even though no idiot lights had went off and no codes jumped. Til recent; now there's a P2401, Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit Low, Vacuum Pump Stuck Off. If anyone has an idea of where we should look next or what might be our cause and if the dying or stalling can be a symptom that would be great. Thinking evap. canister maybe and a vacuum pump problem?

 

When and if you are considering buying a Mustang the gas milage becomes a secondary issue.
If it remains a primary issue for you keep the Jap car.......

 

Buying a used car is a gamble. But mustangs are well made, You can buy a year old car that can be beat to hell. Just give it a good looking over. And good luck with it! Mysti..... have your buddy check the fuel filter, if clogged/plugged up it can cause the issue, as can a fuel pump getting lazy, and a whole bunch of other things.

 

+1 for 100k being broken in, remember the 4.6l is also the engine for fleets of taxi cabs and police cars. Those things get thrashed day in and day out in mostly stop and go driving and run upwards of 200k.

On the mileage part, I'm running a cammed high compression engine with bigger fuel injectors and I can get 23-24 mpg on the interstate if I keep it under 80. Granted I only get 16-17 in the city.
