Default Engine stuttering?

I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if this is the right spot. Anyways, so my problem is I just recently bought a 1968 Mercury Cougar, I was hoping to get help since they are very similar and this is an engine problem, which is the engine seems to stutter at high rpm. When I start it up it sounds rich and good and normal driving is fine, but once I take off and push the pedal down right away it speeds up then stutters a bit(like its coughing) and once I slow down it's a little touchy and then its fine. I'm not sure if it's because it's been sitting for a while (what the previous owner said) and never really has gone fast or if it's something else. I'm not technical at all, this is my first car and it's bothering me that this happened. I don't remember any other times I drove it that it happened before. Idk if this will help but its a 302 4v. Maybe theres nothing wrong and im being paranoid from any sound it makes...idk. So anyone know whats wrong? thanks

How long has it been sitting ? Sounds like a good carb cleaning or rebuild are in order. Your symptoms sound like it's starving for gas on the upper rpm. Which means either the carb is dirty and not supplying enough fuel, or possibly the mechanical fuel pump isn't at 100%, or the fuel filter is clogged. Could be a couple different things, but I'd put my money towards a good carb rebuild first.

Well, just replace the filter for peace of mind, there cheap and easy.

I agree with the above.

Welcome to the forum, even though you don't have a Mustang! If you have not done so already try heading over to the Classics forum - someone over there might have some input as well.
