my car was hit pretty good in the front, and now the battery doesnt hold a charge, Is that more likely the battery or alternator giving out.

 

have you had a load test done?

 

Well its at my friends shop, but he jumped it and it ran for a while then died

 

he should have a handheld machine that hooks to the battery terminal, which will then give a list of simple instructions, and when youre done, it tells you whether you need to replace the battery, or alt. does your car have a gauge to indicate charging? do you have anything in your vehicle that would cause a slow drain? how old is the battery?

 

Sounds like a bad alt. Once the car is running, you should be able to disconnect the battery and car should run without dying out.
