After doing a comprehensive search of this site, I've decided to go ahead and post a question... a friend's 94 3.8L mustang with an automatic has recently started getting stuck in park after it has been parked. What might be the problem? Where do we start to diagnose this one?

THe button on the shifter is impossible (or at least very difficult) to press.

 

Im having the same problem with my 98 auto. It gets worse when its cold out. i have to let the car idle for a few minutes and warm up before i can get it out of gear. you could press the button until your finger is ready to break off and it wont come out of gear.

 

It is prob. the brake switch. You cant push the button in unless the brake is on.

 

for some reason that i do not know , and unable to explain, it could be a switch in the column as well. i oly say this because i had a '95 lt1 and it did that, the key was also not coming out, i thought the cylinder was bad, the locksmith came out and replaced a module of some sort in the column, it was burned out.

 

where would the brake switch be located on a 98 gt?

 

Does it happen when you park on a hill? try pulling the parking brake before you shift into park when you're parking

 

happens all the time when the car is cold.
