Default Driveshaft?

I have this posted down in the v6 forum but havent got much feedback on it so I figured I should post it up here. I'm looking to get an aluminum driveshaft for my 98 v6 stang, but apparently they dont make one. I was told that you can buy one for a v8(they are the same size) and swap the yokes and it will work. Can anyone confirm this? Does swapping the yokes require just a few minutes or the torch cutter?

Geh, working with driveshafts is tricky business because they need to be completely balanced in order to not shake the **** out of your car.

Are you positive they're the same size? If so you could just buy a different universal joint and U bolts, and it'd hook up nicely. You'd have to make sure they make the right U joints first. I'd suggest talking to a driveshaft shop (you can just look in the phone book and call one up) and asking them about it.

You might want to ask them how much to just custom fabricate you one, it probably wouldn't be much more expensive

Ok thanks for the advice. Driveshafts now are like 250 plus shipping so if a custom one could be made for not much more than that it would be awesome. Ill have to call a shop sometime and check it out.

Im not sure exactly what you mean when you say ubolts and universal joints since I just started looking at the drivetrain, so maybe you could explain to me???

Thanks

Autobadges told me they are "exactly the same", so I was just going off of his word...

the yoke is ez to swap out, and no balancing issues. other option is have it cut, then use the same yoke.

the u-joint looks like a small cross that has needle bearings inside of the caps. the u-joint is held in place by 2 clips. To remove, just use needle nose pliers remove clip, press joint out. Reinstall is the same. Good luck!!

i know a place you can call and get one custom if you need to. I'm not sure about the same size and what not, or what mods you would need to make to get it to work if you bought the GT. But.... I know the guys who could tell you. The guy who custom made mine.

see ya!
