its prety easy to take them out actually... have you tried it? its like 2 clips that holds it in. you just pull them out.. it was probly the easyest thing i ever done with my car.
but i took them out. so i won't have to worry about getting Mothers Mag Alum polish all over my paint.

Did you just use a rag? or a buffing wheel?
I tried using the plastX with just a rag and it did nothing haha, so i switched to the dremel and it worked amazing... even though the dremel was tiny so it took a while

I tried that already and I have to say that it is not a permanent solution. I mean it does not solve the problem ... it does not remove the scratches and residue it is just masking the surface. It will go back to your previous condition after the first rain.
If it works out for you let me know step-by step what you did and how long it took you. Maybe you did it differently
