One word sums up the main reason they can handle more hp.. "Displacement".
no that is why they can make more hp with less mods... the ls1 block can handle more power.

a modualar block can hold a lot of hp the weak point on a 4.6 is the rods and pistons then the crank then the block. you will very rarely see a failure of the block on a 4.6 where a old 5.0 i have seen them rip the mains out with a stock rotating assembly. ls1 simply make the power because of displacement they have a huge displacment compared to the 4.6 i would guess a 350cid modular would be an impressive engine.

an ls1 is a 346. yes the rods and rod bolts are the weakest links in the 4.6, but i know a few people whose 4.6 blocks (their motors were forged that have cracked over the "magic" 450whp (not necessarily quickly) and have heard stories of many more. you can buy 302 blocks that will handle 2000hp....

there are after market blocks for the 4.6 too.

come on tim now that's obvious... that fact that a ls1 motor can make over 450whp on a stock block(which was the original question) and and the 4.6 cannot is because it is a better built block from the factory....not because it had a larger displacement. i brought up aftermarket blocks to show the factor limiting the 4.6 to around 450whp is the block...even if it is stuffed with forged internals.
