TRACTION QUESTION
I HAVE A 89 LX VERT(5.0)AUTO W/225/55/16 TIRES AND 2.73 REAR. PRIMARY USE-- NICE DAY CRUSIN.CAR HAS SOME MINOR UPGRADES. I WANT TO UP GRADE REAREND GEAR. MY CONCERN IS FRYING THE HIDES WHEN I STOMP ON IT.TIRES ARE NEW W/NO PLANS TO GO TO BIGGER TIRE. IWANT BETTER ACCELERATION WITH MINOR WHEEL SPIN.ANYONE HAVE A SIMILAR CAR THAT HAS CHANGED TO BIGGER GEAR(HIGHER RATIO)PLEASE RESPOND.RIGHT NOW ON DRY PAVEMENT MY CAR CAN'T BREAK THE TIRES LOOSE WHEN FLOORED!
Upper and lower control arms will help reduce any wheel hop. Since it is not a daily driver you really should think about a good drag radial tire, such as the Mickey Thompson or BFG, they don't need to be any bigger but they are much much stickier. Tires are the #1 best mod for traction.
it's the aod giving you the trouble.
a 5-speed has a 3.35:1 1st gear compared to your 2.40:1 ist gear in your auto
3.27's were available on the automatics, and i had a '90 gt hardtop AOD w/that had that gear, and it was still slow. (14.40's)
a 3.73 is decent gear for you car, (4.10's are the best) w/ the 'vert being heavy....my '90 lx 'vert AOD ran a 15.10 w/ street tires and 3.73's (still pretty crappy)
that same day i got a 13.60 run on the street tires w/ a zex 100 shot. (everything else was bone stock)
but even w/ the weight, when you gear it like that, traction will be an issue, and ultimately your gonna want a set of cheater slicks.

if you have an auto get 4.10's if your using a 5 speed get 3.73's your not gonna really spin the tires every time u get on it, yes you will spin the tires when u want but if u know what your doing u can get a perfectly good launch and acceleration with minimal wheel spin
