clutch chatter???
i was wondering if anyone has heard the term. i had pep boys change my clutch and now it shakes. it might just be getting broken in, but i brought it in to see what else it could be. at first they said it shook when i brought it in, and i told them it was BS. once i argued and started yelling in front of other customers, they changed their story and said it was clutch chatter. i was hoping one of you with more knowledge/experience with cars might have. were they just BS'ing me to get me out of there, or is it legit. they said it was basically a bad clutch, and said that RAM should give me a new clutch and they better pay for it to be installed. thanks for any help

i really had no choice. i tried changing it myself 2 weeks ago with some friends, but one of them said that there was some hydraulic cable going from the tranny to the engine that we couldn't release w/o a certain tool, which we didn't have. said it'd be safer.don't know if it matters, but the two mechanics were def in their 40's

how many miles are on the clutch? what kind of clutch? if it's still in the break in period (first 4-500 miles) the clutch may chatter like that, especially if it's a performance clutch. </P>
edit-the hydraulic lines don't have to be disconnected. you just have to disconnect the slave cylinder from the bellhousing (14mm bolts?). it's simple. no special tools are required, so next time you can DIY.</P><edited><editID>SpeedRicer</editID><editDate>38012.5840277778</editDate></edited>

prob not even 100 miles on the clutch yet, it's a ram HD. </P>
<U>thanks for that info, i'll know better next time. i shoulda come here first, instead of listening to my buddies who obviously don't know what they're talkin about. thanks a lot for the help</U>

how does it feel in the upper rpm? any vibration there? the thing about the ram HD is that it's practically instant grip. the springs on the clutch disc are so tight that they don't allow for much cushion, hence the chatter.
