Default Breaking her in.......

So I've read/heard that it's smart to baby her for the first 1000 miles. I've had my '06 GT for a week and just drive around like an old lady till the wee hours trying to rack up miles so I can wind her up nice and healthy when she's good and ready. I suppose it's good to take it easy anyways to get used to the braking and power and whatnot but is it really necessary to baby her for a whole 1000 miles?

Actually what I did for the first 500 miles is keep the tach moving. I would wait until she was fully warmed up to do any heavy throttle acceleration, but I have heard that doing some heavy throttle with the car good and warm, actually helps scuff the rings and gives a better oil seal.

I've been breaking mine in that way since I bought my first new one in 1986--keeping that tach moving, even if it means driving in 3rd gear, 4th, etc. for the first 500 miles and none of them consumed any oil between oil changes: 1 Ford, 2 Dodges, 2 Chryslers, 2 Hondas, and now 1 Mustang GT!

And hey, then you have a good excuse for pulling away rapidly after you stop at the stop sign or red light!

Hope this helps.

Mike

I varied the tach for about 500 miles, then proceeded to install a bunch of stuff on her (see sig) right after that.

+1, well to an extent, few rules. NEVER romp while cold, no cruise control for 1000 miles, and when your having fun flying around be sure to engine brake so creare vacumme to get some oil up top. but besides that just use common sense. oh and some people will recommend changing your oil at 1000 miles as a break in procedure. I did!

No cruise control for 1000 miles. Vary your speed often.

yup like he said vary your speeds, you don't want to keep the engine at a steady RPM for to long, it even says it right in the owners manual.
