Default Modded exhaust - passing inspection

I am just curious as to how any car with a modded exhaust, specifically the cat deleted ones, pass emissions inspections. Do you guys all know a guy, that knows a guy, that knows a guy, or does everyone just save their cats and bolt them back on when the time comes?

Well here in Illinois new cars dont take the test until 4 years. Handheld tuners can turn off the oxygen sensors so no check engine light comes on. Also here they just plug into the OBDII port and check for DTC's.(diagnostic trouble code) If your clear, you pass.

In states where it comes in question the smart people reinstall the cats.

Haha that's great. I figured with all of the stuff you could do with tunes that there was a way to hack it. MA says I'll need an emissions test next year! What a ridiculous system...

Thanks for the info!

I'd agree on putting the cats back in. It's not like it's a ton of work, and I don't know about your state...but we get fined rather badly out here if we are found to not have them in, from what I understand.

It's not a matter of the vehicle passing the emissions test without the cats, it is a matter of a visual inspection. Been the law for a LONG TIME that whatever it comes with from the factory it is supposed to have. Hard to "hack" a visual inspection.

In Illinois they dont visual inspect unless you are going back in for a retest from a previous failure, and then they just look at what parts you have replaced. Every state is going to be different.

Just find a friendly inspection station. The place I have taken all my cars to just check lights, horn, and blinkers. Just in case, I'll keep my stock mid-pipe.
