Default Fail safe engine mode

My wife was driving our mustang to work on monday and it started running like crap. She called me on my cell and said it was reading the fail safe engine code. She shut it off and it ran good for the rest of the day. Then today it happened again, then the check engine light came on. Has anyone had this problem? What was the cause and fix?

YOu should tell your dealer, but it may not be anything major. There are a number of threads on here about that exact situation. The computer is very complex, and also very safe. The failsafe mode could come on due to an actual problem, or only a perceived one. If you have a serious problem, you will also get an engine light, and the failsafe mode wont reset when you turn it off and back on. Still, id tell your dealer, let them see if the computer threw a code that can be picked up by the diagnostic computer, but my initial guess is no.

I do not have any other mods other than axelbacks. I did pull out the air restricter by the airbox, but that was over a year ago (The day I bought the car). I guess I'll make an appointment. The ford dealership here is a joke. It took them 2 weeeks to check about my auto transmission leak a while back, so I hate to leave it with them. Thanks for the replys.

did the check engine light come on? does the car run strange like it is holding back when you accelerate?
if so, I will bet you that it's the DTC P0340/P0344/P0345/P0349 errors,
there is a TSB explaining the issue and fix by the dealer,

Take it to the dealer ASAP

The check engine light did come on. The car also runs like a four cyl. when I try to accelerate. I am going to make an appointment on monday. Thanks to all who wrote me back. It was very helpful.

I had something like that w/ my last car (3000gt), and it turned out to be the wires(spark plug wires i think) were not conn %100. I would check that oout.

That's cause it shuts down half of the cylinders in order to reduce engine temp

I'm no car expert but I just picked up my GT yesterday, and these damn things dont even have spark plug wires, they seem to have individual coils for each plug, amazing.
