That all sounds like a huge pain in the *** for the extra HP it gives...I think I'd only do a gear swap if I was planning on being at the track pretty often.

I have heard you actually lose horsepower even though you may climb a pine tree in 3 seconds. How much are we talking about getting the gears and installation? Will my dealership be able to notice what I have done to it because I too want these. What will be the new top end?

they dont give any HP, they just make you accelerate faster, and a gear swap is the best mod for your money[&:]

i got my gears for $245 with royal purple gear lube and the install kit but you'll also have to buy a pinion bearing its like $17 i think and i got charged $250 to install the gears at a local shop...so in all it was alittle over $500 and now i had to order more gear lube to change it after my break in period so ... the total will go up a tiny bit after that

So someone tell me in technical terms why you would have to "break in" new gears. You don't have to do this with a new car and as far as I can tell you get new gears with a new car. Also why would you have to change the oil so soon. You don't have to do this with the new car. You can't tell me fords stock gears are made any better then the aftermarket gears. I know I don't need to break in my new washer blades or take it easy on my new tires or play my new subs quietly for the first 50 hours before cranking them up.
Anyway not saying I know what I'm talking about when it comes to gears but it does not make sence to me.

i asked the same question to Joe at Mustang Magic who did mine. He told me there really wasn't a break in period. i mean the factory doesn't "break them in" anyway onm the stockers.. He told me on most of his jobs "the customers leave here and bang all 4 gears going down the block and i've never had anyone break anything". Just my 2c

A correct answer.. did you break in your STOCK gears.???. I didn't so why would you need to break in a good set of 4.10 gears. or whatever gear you want....????
put them gears in .. trust me... best bang for the buck IMO

RE: 4.10 gears break in?
Just got my 3.73's installed today (I went with 3.73 because i'm putting a blower on in a few months) while my dad has 4.10's in his stang. Either way the break in period is NOTHING like these other people are saying. You are supposed to take it easy for the first 200 miles not 3,000 miles. Whoever told you that should be shot because that is a rediculous statement, in which case you should drive it for a decent period of time and let it sit for about 2-4 hours and repeat that once more within your 200 miles.
Good luck with whatever route you take, hope you don't take 3,000 miles on your beauty to realize that your gears have already been broken in...

RE: 4.10 gears break in?
when we set up new rear ends for our stock car (1/2 mile dirt track) and other peoples cars, we would put it on jack stands and let it idle in first gear for 20 minutes and then off to the track for a night of racing. we never had a ford 9 in break. circle track racing is hard on everything. but i agree with all of the above comments these rear ends are much different.

3:73 gears how well do they respond? I'm still leaning on 4:10. Will I still be able to enjoy 20 plus gas mileage?
