Default Review: Steeda Pulley Installation

It took me a couple of hours, and I ran through many speed bumps. I wasn't well equipped, and I didn't jack the vehicle. (Turns out you really don't need to.)

My first speed bump was when I was trying to "clear some room" I remoted the intake tube, power steering, and coolant tank. I removed the screws from the fan housing, but I couldn't get the electric part to disconnect. So I ended up just letting it sit there like that.

Loosened the water pump pulley, it spun so I had to hold it a little to break them loose.

The crank shaft pulley broke lose with EASE! Just my torque wrench and a 18mm socket...

I didn't know what attachments to use with the pulley puller, and actually messed it up the first time. Hopefully I didn't screw up the threads, I don't think I did. The new one went on, had some trouble getting the bolt in early on... so I thought I stripped the threads. It eventually went on and in. I torqued it to 66ft/lbs, loosened 1 full turn, torqured to 37 ft/lbs... then another 90 degrees give or take.

I wasn't sure what to do with the driver's side stud on the alternator bracket.. Hence my earlier post. I remembered CrazyAl mentioning grinding it down, so that's what I did. (Had to unbury the grinder though.)

Wrestled the belt on and forgot to torque down the water pump pulley... Then I hooked everything else back up. Screwed the fan back on, and so forth. Started it up, and there was an amplification in belt noise. Not sure if this is "normal" or because I didn't torque the water pump pulley, or if the belt just needs to get used to the new pulleys.

I ran outside a few minutes ago to squeeze a rachet in there and tighten them by hand, but I have no clue what torque they are at and hope that A) They don't fall out. or B) They don't sheer the bolts off. The torque setting is only 18ft/lbs... So I don't know.

Oh, and 3/4 of this was done in the darkness with someone holding the flashlight... Hopefully my urgence to get them on before Sunday doesn't come back to bite me in the ***. (Big time if I screwed something big up.) We'll see on the drive to work how she's doing.

Thanks CrazyAl and all the others who gave me some tips... I either over looked the alternator bracket part, that was really my only difficulty, and of course using the wrong setup for the pulley puller.

I hope you used a shorter belt.

Why? For most UDP kits you don't need a shorter belt. That's why they come with a larger water pump pulley, to take up the slack in the belt.

You only need another belt if you're going to run an electric water pump like Mezeire.

I haven't felt any difference. I think the longer I get used to it the more I'll feel a difference; if any. I'm more concerned with the engine noise. Steeda says that the 66ft/lbs > Loosen 1 turn > 37 ft/lbs > Tighten 90 degrees method doesn't always work. So they told me to torque it to 116 ft/lbs instead of tightening it 90 degrees. He said if I undertorqued it, then I would get the sound I thought I got... yet I still have the sound I think... I need to compare it with a stock Mustang to determine if it's all in my head, or if the noise is really different.

Yeah, you're right, I was thinking about mine when I added the electric water pump. Stock belt works just fine with just the udp's.

I'm trying to understand the noise you are talking about. When mine went on I could hear no difference in sound what so ever from stock. I used the stock belt with my Steeda and all was well. Seems like something else is going on to me????

You do NOT need to remove all that crap to get at the pulley, and you unscrew the water pump bolt and replace it witht he supplied bolt not grind it off.
