If it helps your decision any, JDM Engineering professionally races the automatics. For a long time they were racing the automatic with no mods except the torque converter. I don't remember the power level they took the stock auto up to but I know it was well over 500rwhp. I think a lot of it is in the tune and JDM knows more about these autos than any I've seen. -Joe
JDM is def. one of the top shops for tuning these cars. I have been told by them and others that 450rwhp is very drivable on the auto, personally I am going turbo but they have the same nasty effect at times . Joe how dose yours drive, all you have done is the torque converter, drive shaft and gears right? Just curious since I have a set of 4.10 gears I am going to install when we install the turbo.

Of course you can supercharge an automatic S197. The trans will probably hold unless you go over 8 PSI and/or drag race a lot. If youpulley up the boost or launch on slicks a lot the longevity of your trans may not be too long.
My auto self-destructed at 10 PSI after a few months. These wimpy French made transmissions are not really setup for high horsepower and torque. The torque converters are really poorly made also and I definately recommend changing to an aftermarket converter. I went with a billett stall speed converter from Level 10 but TCI sells a re-workd OEM one that some people have had some luck with.

I have had my 2005 Automatic W/ 38000 miles, supercharged for a little over two months now. Still tweaking the transmission tune for drivability. The car runs great. Have been to the track two different times and have a total of six runs on it. Best ET to date is 12.1 Sec @ 114.6 Mph With a 1.76 / 60' time.
I do not beat the hell out of it and I DO have the transmission shifting firm under load.

Definitely get yourself a GOOD torque converter. Billet case with a two year warranty

I will be installing a new torque converter soon: http://www.lightningforceperformance...-gt-p-475.html

It is the weakest and most inefficient link in the driveline now that I am putting out decent torque numbers. It should drop about 5 tenths off of my ET's.

It has been a real kick in the *** to drive since the SC install. Except for being lowered the car looks totally stock. Sure is a surprise to some of the SRT8, GTO, and Camaro SSdrivers when they get foolish and bite off a little more then they can chew.

And a little side note: "I have NEVER missed a shift" (Go for it)

My s/c auto tranny works great.

At high boost, you want the trans cooler, tq converter, extra clutches, stronger bands, valve body mods, etc.

The 4r75w can be built to handle 1000 flywheel hp.

A nice thing about an auto is that you can stay on the gas during shifts, never loosing boost.

Matt, yup, that's all I've done to that part of the drivetrain but what else is there? It drives GREAT! So much fun! The reason I went with the SC instead of turbo was I just wanted big always available power. The SC feels more like a bigger engine vs the turbo has that kick-in. Turbos seem to be better for big power and WOT where the SC puts out all the time. Many people like that kick and the noises of a turbo - I think you'll like it any way you go! -Joe

That is the reason I went with the turbo, I want to over time build the motor and start uping the power. With a basic setup though there is no real lag since the turbo is sized well. I'm just waiting for the Turbonetics kit to ship at this point. Your right though the wy to go all depends on personal preferences and what you are doing with the car.
