Am I doing something wrong?
Do you have the IUP? if you do, select the menu where you can see the little bars as far as how your instant mpg is doing.. and find the range that works best on your car in certain gears under constant throttle.
I tried the same thing...low RPMs/high gear and it seemed as ifmy gas miliage was worse than when I drove the car harder. So now I dont feather the thing and just drive it like it wants to be driven...and I seem to be doing better on gas. I think GT Bob was right...by lugging the engine you arent helping anything. Best thing you can do is get a CAI and Tune...Ive read that helps with gas miliage; that is aslong as you dont let the HP boost give you the ole lead foot sickness.
How far out are you running the gears to get it to 5th? When in daily driving you can increase your MPG if you shift at 3K it is enough to keep the car in the proper opperating range without lugging the engine. If you are always running it up to 4K+ as a habit you are eating gas.
Lugging an engine is never good. Most automatics will shift into overdrive when you let off the gas above 35 so if you have an auto then disengage the overdrive around town. With both a manual or an auto, don't go into fifth until you are 55 or more mph. 2K to 3K is where you'll see your best mileage.
well I have always tried to keep it in as high of a gear as possible. So on a 40 mph road I used to be in 5th. Normally I tried to shift around 1900-2200.
After hearing your opinions I try to stay around 2,000 and it likes it much better! And shifting like 2,500
The thing is completely stock Jsyn.

i keep my car below 2 if possible, always have w/ all my sticks. about 1600 when im trying to get good mpg, which isnt to often.
Im no mec, but 2 1/2 rpm way to high, 2 maybe...I like right below 2.

Did you catch the drafting episode on Mythbusters?
If you follow 100 ft behind a tractor trailer at 55mph you increase fuel efficiency by 20%. Tailgate 10 ft behind and efficiency increases 80%. They also mention that you need 2 seconds to safely respond to the truck's air brakes and for that you should be 150 ft back. They also proved that a piece of retread that is lost from a blow-out will take out your windshield and decapitate at 40mph.
