to answer your question about why they are not as good as custom look at it this way.

They have to be able to operatle everywhere from Florida to California. They need to operate at all elevations. They need to operate on diferent cars dependably (each mustang is diferent). That means the canned tunes, being tuned for the lowest common denominator, leave a ot of performance on the table.

The term "custom" tune is thrown around a lot. It means many different things to different people. To me, any mail order tune is a canned tune, some are just more aggressive than others or they might offer different options. The only real custom tune is done in person on a dyno.

Even a so called "canned" tuners like a SCT Strategy Flash can allow for many "custom" options. It can accomodate five or so cold air intakes, several different gear changes, three octane changes, cmcv deletes, turn off O2 sensors, etc. all on the same device you buy once. You simply select the option from a pulldown menu. No need for updated tunes for the most popular modifications. It also works for all computer codes, not just one, and several different vehicles. It's not marketed very well (most don't even know it can do all that) and isn't as aggressive (or so they say), so it doesn't get mentioned much on these boards.

Anything you get through the mail is going to have some margin of safety, it has too. A tune done a dyno, though, specifically made for your car is going to be the best, but it's also the most expensive. That's a real custom tune in my opinion.

The most interesting question to me is: How much better is a dyno tune than a mail order tune?

I've only messed around with mail order tuning, so I can't say.

suuuuure be different and make it difficult LOL.....
This is how I see it:
1)dyno tune for best performance
2) custom tune(from tuners like Brenspeed andB.ama 2nd best performance to the dyno probably good enough for DD unless you want to compete or something)
3)Canned tune(tunes you get from SCT and Diablo).

I am running Brenspeeds tune currently since I have decided for the time being to stay N/A(I dont have a 3rd vehicle for winter driving) I'll probably try both B.ama and VMP and maybe also Tillman.

I thought SCT and Diablo only sold tuners and chips.....didn't know they did "canned tunes".

My idea of a custom tune is someone gets their car on a dyno and checks/re-checks metrics, such as A/F ratio, etc.... to optimizeany given motor's power output. A process that can take1.5 to 3 hours. I tend to think along the lines of wmtheflash.....how doyoureplace this tuning process with a tune from <insert vendor> that was done on someone elses car with the same mods?

I was thinking of the more generic tunes out there, maybe mail order is better term but the tunes you get from places like brenspeed and b.ama are more tailored to what you want and what you have on the car. I dont disagree a dyno tune is the best way to go for performance it's justkinda costly and the tunes you get from the better tuners are typically close enough to make it more cost effective, especailly if you dont race.

Would you buy steak in a can at the grocery store, or go back to the butchers department and get a nice fresh steak that was cut that day? [sm=closed.gif]

Hey guys, I've got a question on these canned tunes.

My goals are to delete my stang's adaptive learning program and make the auto tranny shift better. While I'm at it, I was going to install a CAI. Is there a canned tune that handles all of that?

Also, does it matter what tuner I buy? Can I use an SCT for this and get a custom tune later if I want?

Thanks

No to the adaptive learning, yes to the shifting, yes you can get a tune for a CAI and yes to the rest.....these topics are all covered pretty well throughout the forums......
