Default Reducing Drone

Hey guys,

I recently switched over from the Flowmaster AT A/B to the Mac Boom Tubes. Wow what a difference, so much more bark when you tap the pedal.

Anyways, the Flowmasters had absolutely no drone. However, the Boom Tubes have moderate drone from about 1800 - 2000 RPMs while crusing on the highway with the windows up, and it's actually kind of annoying. I have an automatic so the car usually will sitat those RPMswhile crusing. I love the sound of them otherwise, especially under WOT. But, I guess my question is, is there any way to get rid of this drone? I want to keep my boom tubes, so maybe there is some kind of other exhaust mod I can do to keep the same sound, but reduce the highway noise... Thanks.

I am only giving my $0.02,but if you have an X pipe instead of an H pipe ,the tendency is to have less drone at the rpm to stated. I hesitate to give an answer, because I am unfamiliar with your system.BTW,alot of people prefer an H pipe, because they like the overall sound better, despite having the drone at 2000rpm.

i would think the flowmasters produce more drone than the boomtubes. the best way to get rid of your boomtube drone is post a soundclip for us please?

there are many things you can do. welding in some resonators is an "extreme" solution; you could get better clamps, you could get sound dampening, or you could grow a pairhaha jk i know how annoying that drone can be. i honestly wasn't expecting that so many people would think that theres a decent amount of drone with these. i mean, theres no drone with the lm's, and the boomtubes are just a cleaner version of them.....weird.

I have the drone happy Stingers with FRPP X-pipe and they still give plenty of drone at around 2k RPM. I never had a the stock H with the Stingers, so I don't know if it's even worse with the H.

A lot of people are putting blankets in the spare tire well. It will absorb alot of that drone. I lined my trunk with quilt batting from Walmart. It only cost a few bucks. I pulled the trunk lining out, layed down the batting and reinstalled the trunk liner. I also pulled the plastic cover off where the trunk lid catch it at and stuffed it with batting. I know I have the SLP LM but it helped them as well. Not quite as loud inside but mean as hell outside.

Like MustangEsq, I had some drone from my Violators until I switched to 4.10 gears. Because of the different throttle positions I now use, the drone is gone! But if you don't want to change your gears the sound mats in the trunk will work great, too.

I put down dynamat in the trunk, didnt do to much, added a o/r h pipe, made it louder sometimes, got 4.10s drone gone......but you know what, the drone never bothered me at all!! with the windows down i never noticed it and the sound from the setup is worth it!

1+ same here the drone is no big deal to me and many just put different size resonators before the H/X pipe to help eliminate drone. You change the exhaust note at different times and the drone lessens or disappears alltogether. Hope it helps

I definitely want to do CAI/tune and get 4.10's, I guess I am going to be doing that sooner than later then! I may try some sound deadening material in the trunk too.
