Hi Turbostang ! Well the TC is a great improovement in performance ! Worth every peny for real, I think it is the best mod i've done so far into the car. I can now powerbrake up to 2,500 rpms (stock 1,900 - 2,000) and the revs are always in the power band when you floor the gas. I higly recomend DR´s if you get a good TC and gears cuz u will roast any street tire from a dig lol. planning in switching to 4.10´s
About the power kick that just depends in your tune, i've tried 3 tunes so far and Dougs Race tune is the best and the fastest response I get.

And cars equally moded the 5-speed manual will be faster since it has less parasitic loss and u can rev it way higher when launching.
sounds like a great mod! I will most likely be getting an auto GT, quite honestly I just want a fast comfortable car and this looks like to be the best buy for me.

I am pretty sure a full bolt on 4:10 w/converter GT will suit me just fine. Will there be faster cars out there? yeah..but oh well, not looking to be king of the streets or anything lol.

no matter how much $$ you spend on a car, theres ALWAYS another one faster than you ... so its not of a big deal.

ditto...it's best to have a 'fast car' rather then try to have the 'fastest car' - more often then not it's more like the a race between the deepest pockets lol

yeah, well mine has a hole in them and I can have fun anytime..hmm...

wait a sec..

I wouldn't shift the car. If you have a custom tune from B a m a or Brenspeed, the car probably shifts better than you could get it to manually shifting from 1 to 2 to 3. I ended up getting a 3000 stall TC from TCI for about 540 bucks and paid only 250 to have it put in. It definetly helped my 60 foot. It went from about a 2.1 or 2.2 to a 1.8. For a stock converter... 1.8 is pretty good. I still havent run the car using drag radials. All of my runs have been on street tires, but they hooked enough to get me a decent time. Before, on the stock converter, launching from 2 grand seemed to work the best for me. Hold that brake down, and gas it to 2, then when you see that third yellow light.... go!
as for on the street does shifting the car and holding the gear longer help with added power to the wheels? or does it just make it sluggish? I know '1' without the overdrive on most cars gives the car plenty of low end grunt..kinda curious of how much umph it would have with 450 lbs. trq in an auto GT while shifting. Most of the fun is in the lower gears anyways when driving a manual..

Holding it in gear longer will help power regardless of what kind of transmission you have with the following kept in mind:
If your horsepower peak is at 6100 rpm and you shift before that you are not getting your full horsepower. If you have an auto and it shifts automatically before your peak HP point, the shift point can be adjusted with a tuner. Holding an automatic in any gear tohit the powerband is generally a bad idea (unless you have a full manual valve body).
Turning overdrive on or off has NO EFFECT on any gear other than the overdrive gear, i.e. the AT in the mustang is a 5 speed with 5th gear being the overdrive gear that is controlled by the button. If you turn OD off, the ONLY gear affected in any way whatsoever is 5th gear.
A properly tuned and set-up AT in our cars will be a BEAST with 450 RWTQ if it is tuned and setup properly...actually it is with far less power than that.
In summary, with our cars with the AT, get a tuner (SCT, Diablo, etc.) and have a custom tune loaded for whatmods you have and the sort of shifts you are looking for and leave the shifter in "D".

I flashed until my mods overpowered the tires. Could get in the 1.8 60ft. until I began spinning out of controll at the lights. Now I stage as high as I can until the tires try to break loose (around 3300rpm) still right around 1.8 60's but no spinning and the 330's are much better. And keep it in "D" no Q's just believe it is better, with no tune it is right for the HP/TQ you are making. Get an auto tune ASAP and hold on.

are you super charged? my only concern is it being able to handle the power with a SC just bolted on 8psi and all just as it is with a safe tune and stock block and a few other mods.

if it really is all that trouble than I might just look into a 5 speed like I originally wanted..

for the sake of conversation, how durable is the stock automatic with just the basic bolt ons and gears??

I do have plans for an SC in the future but if it hauls bawls as it does with just the above mentioned mods I might just leave it be in terms of power.Maybe some suspension mods and tires to get the power to the ground some more..

Plenty durable. I've heard of plenty of guys well into the 300 range for rwhp (pretty good with basic bolt-ons) and have had no issues. Plenty of guys out there too with 6-8 psi boost running on stock ATs. I would't imagine there would be any serious issues up to the 430 rwhp range as long as you don't just try to beat it to death. Running a good trans cooler is a must on any AT putting any power to the ground. Actually, there are plenty of other parts that would give up long before the trans would, such as the factory driveshaft. The AT should be able to handle pretty much the same power as the MT (stock for stock). My plans for next year include a vortech H.O. setup, trans cooler, 1 piece driveshaft and 3.73 gears. Wheels and tires sre probably going to happen too. Worse comes to worse and the TCI5r55s should be out by then.
