GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

I've been stopping in at the local dealer from time to time to pay them a visit - became good friends after buying 3 vehicles there (mainly aftermarket guy lol). Anyways I can't help but notice the GT500's are down to about $5-7K over MSRP, that's a $15K drop in like the last 6 months.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a Whipple, but can't help but wonder where the break even point on the investment would be on going straight to an already blown GT500 that could support 700+hp for not that much coin. As you all know, going above 10psi on our stock 4.6 and we are on borrowed time unless we rebuild and go forged.

I haven't invested a ton in mods yet.

If you could get a GT500 at or very close to sticker, would you do that or SC your GT? I figured I might as well weigh my options before sinking 6k into a SC.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

Thats not enough drop. That's still too much over msrp on a car that isn't as hot and brand new as in the past.
Build your bottom end and get a whipple or kb that'll smoke a stock gt500. And I'm sure you'll come out saving a decent amount of cash.

eh Thats a tuff one just because I Love my GT so much...But if I really had the money and could get a black one with red interior I would....Not only can they put out more expandablepowerbut in the long runthey hold their value better

Not a modded one

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

That's the toughest part, I've grown to love the current GT it would be hard to see it go! But then I think about 5-6K on a SC and then all the supporting mods (Driveshaft, suspension, tires, etc) and I'm dang near to the GT500 range. And the GT500, as you said, is expandable without forging.

Thanks for the initial input all - appreciate all the advice!

I would probably have to reshuffle my current 'fleet' of 4 vehicles :D Including trading the GT and my 06 F150 Supercrew for the gt500 and a cheaper daily driver. Although I don't even drive the F150 as is....it's an 06 with 4900 miles on it [&:]

I think in a couple weeks I will head into the dealer and see if what kind of deal I can work out with them - if any, on the trades. The one they have sitting there right now is black (ebony) with the tungsten stripes....that thing would look sick with some black gt500 rims.

+1 GT500 motor is a beast and for a few hundred dollars you can have another 100 rwhp (pulley and idler). You can't do that with a GT!

SUPER SNAKE

This post is nonsense and pointless to me, cause I won't be affording a GT500 anytime soon hahaha. Good luck with your decision though, whichever you choose!

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

To me it depends what you want and what your budget is.

If you have the cash and the interest I say get the GT 500. They have tons of performance potential. 700rwhp is great but is overkill for the street IMO. You will never get a street tire that can hook up. Top end pulls would be fun though.

If you just want a fun street car that you can mod the heck out of and would be happy in the 450-475rwhp range I say keep the GT. I think that power level makes a great DD and you can take 99% of whats on the road. This way you can do tons of visual mods and performance mods.

My personal goals are allowing me to build a car to my taste with great performance for less than the MSRP of a GT 500. If your goals are more than that it makes more sense to start with the GT 500.

Good luck,

We should all be so lucky as to have this kind of dilema.

If you got the money go with the gt500

My opinion is to go with the GT500. I don't think you can recoup your investment on a SC modded GT.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

if money is no option, obviously get the gt500 for all the above reasons listed, and because it will hold its value AND because if u want a status symbol, thats it. Anyone can hop up a GT, but if u get the gt500, u got the real deal, and yes, i drove one and it is a beast.......U probably arent likely to encounter future mechanical problems like the people who have 10-11 psi superchargers, just my 2 cents.....The new ebony color looks sick with the silver stripes....

Since you appear to have the coin... GT500 is the answer.
I'd just wait for the last year of the S197, I doubtthe car will be more than sticker then;).
Providing Carroll is still alive though.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

All of your input is awesome - thanks to all! I don't think the money side of things would be too much of a problem as long as I downgrade the truck to something less substantial. That sucker was $40k itself and of course has some mods too. I think a Ford Edge (for her) and a GT500 would even out payment-wise. I'll have to use the old grand prix or old truck as a DD.

In all reality, the SC on the GT is probably more than enough power for a weekend cruiser. For some reason there isnt a track within 100 miles of me.

But like one of the OP said, it can be a few hundred bucks away from another 100hp and the sky is nearly the limit. I just started thinking, if I get blown on the GT would 10psi satisfy me forever or would I want to go forged someday? Going forged would definitely be getting right into the shelby range.

If I could get one new I would :D I can't buy a used mustang because I'd always fear what kind of abuse it went through.

On a side note, this same dealer also has two Shelby GT's - one vert and one coupe. They look to already be going for sticker now. There was also one that looked to have the full cervinis kit going for $46k.

Guy at the dealer told me they don't allow test drives on the GT500...period. I can understand that though, there would be a line 50 deep trying to take that bad boy for a spin. It actually is ebony with alloy stripes...I think I said tungsten before.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

I understand no test drives but if you tell them that you are serious and start the paperwork I am sure they would. You always have to drive the car you want to buy since they can all be a bit different. You dont want to be pulling in your driveway at home and hear that first thunk of the suspension or something.

Good luck, sounds like you made up your mind.

Congrats

I wish I had the coin for a GT500. It's everything I wish in a car. It's my current mustang on steroids.

But I am perfectly happy with my current stang. And although it's not new anymore, I still think I will keep it forever. The car was there when I got married to the love of my life, so I hold it very dear.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

It looks like prices have consistently dropped to around the $50K range in the area...I checked with another dealer about 20 miles away and they have two red/white striped 08's going for 50k. Shouldn't be long and they will be at MSRP.

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

If you can get the GT500 for invoice, like $39000 for the coupe "maybe", you will have spent alot of moneyon a car that weighs like almost 500 lbs more than a GT , simply add a blower to a stock gt and you are already as fast as a GT500, of course I am all about performance, the looks are ok but if I were to purchase a GT500 I would want all that exterior crap stripped off, I would want it to look just like a stock GT just for "sleeper"factor !!! lol

Here is an example of my arguement:

I paid $26000 for my GT thru X-plan, which i am sure you will never be able to use for a GT500, so lets say you get lucky and can geta GT500 for $45000, either slightly used or whatever thats a good price, that's 20k you could drop into a stock GT instead!!

The GT500 is basically the same car !! 5.4 engine withFord GT heads is the big difference, all the cosmetic crap you can get aftermarket if you want, the suspension upgradesare really not that great compared to what you coulddo aftermarket for a GT with a great budget, hell 20K you load up on every conceivable top quality bolt-on, upgrade brakes, fuel system, wheels/tires, suspension, integrate a roll cage, upgrade to a Ford 9" rear, get a real blower (KB or Whipple) or turbo, replace alot of the heavy stock components with lighter, stronger parts, you would have a monster GT that still weighsat least 500 lbs lessthan the GT500 and still ultimately costs you less !!! You would probably have ahigh 10/low 11 sec.car when it was all said and done !!

Now if you wantthe Shelby GT500 for thecollector/investment value you probably already have enough money to not have to worry about suchdecisions and just buy it !!! lol Keep it in a garage for 30 years and make some money at the end !! lol

Plus, think of the fun you can have picking out your mods, installing some, really customizing the hell out of a GT, wish I could that with mine, the collectors can shell out the outrageous mark-up values on the GT500s, I actually want to drive my car alot !!! lol

IMHO

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

UPDATE: I bring the GT in this Saturday to get a trade-in value and start working on some numbers for the GT500. If I can break even, I am going to jump on the GT500.

But one main question....what color combo????? They have 2 torch reds with white stripes. Both have the crimson seat inserts - and I'm not sure if I like that option or all charcoal.

Which is better....vista blue with white stripes or torch red and white stripes?

RE: GT500 or Supercharge the GT?

I was all about the GT500; but, Desslok put up a good arguement. I love my GT and won"t get rid of her for anything. It is my DD and I still get excited every time I drive it ! I've had other american muscle cars; but, for some strange reason - this one IS IT ! I don't mind taking my time upgrading and molding her into the fine machine I know she could be !
HOWEVER
I still have to stick to the GT500. It is a better start - off the floor it is battle ready without voiding your factory warranty. Just a few more dollars for a truck load of ponies when you're financially ready for the next move. Re-sale means nothing IMO 'cause that's not a thought to me. More potential. I am a BIG CS fan too.
The BRAIN said GT ! The GUT said 500. (budget providing - cause mine is GT only)
