Tune question
I went to the track bone stock and ran a 14.1 at 99mph and went back today with nothing more than the preloaded SCT 93 tune and went 13.4 at 104. I say yes the tuner is worth every penny. Not to mention you cancorrect your speedo if you change tire sizes or gears.
since you already have the k&n, just get the tuner w/custom tunes. you can talk to justin at vmptuning.com. he'll give you solid advice. from my research, the brand/type of cai make little difference. it's up to you to decide for asthetics & slight differences in performance. the tune will make a huge difference for responsiveness, shift points, power, etc.
for me the VMP intake was sufficient. i'm not into racing at track days. the stang is my dd. the intake & tuner w/3 custom tunes from vmp are on sale for 439 + shipping too. a tuner w/3 tunes should cost about 4 bills. the 87 performance tune is awesome. i just installed it last friday. can't wait to try the 91 perf tune.
good luck. i'm sure you'll really enjoy the tunes who ever you buy from. bama, brenspeed, & evoperform all have huge followings as well. i went w/ vmp because justin has a great rep for service & tunes, and because of the sale price on the combo.

From personal experience the tuned K&N intake will make less HP than a C&L or JLT. My friend had a K&N filter and got a tune for it and put down around 278 rwhp. I got my C&L intake and tune and with just the canned diablo tune I put down 288rwhp. We didn't do the pulls on the same day so conditions could have factored in a little but 10rwhp seems pretty significant to me.
I've talked to Bama and also a custom tuner and they both recommend sticking with the K&N. Yes the other will give you a little bit more, you also don't need to swap intakes at the dealer when you have a K&N. The tune is where you really feel the difference. Bama was great to talk to, give them a call.
