Forged Rotating Kit - DIY? Part 1

I think quite a few of us guys running
8 - 10psi, would like to:

1) turn up the boost to 12
2) still run pump gas (say 92)
3) install this kit ourselves, in the comfort of
our own garage.

We're not interested in building a monster,
but we want piece of mind, that a forged
assembly will offer.

Can someone with pretty much no skills, but has
the tools, the Ford service manualand is not
worried about lengthy downtime, install this?

Comments, opinionsand advice are welcomed.

Update: As of today May 15, I am planning to
attempt this. I'm gathering the special tools needed
and am preparing my garage for the main event.

I havn't decided for sure, on who's rotating kit (Haney
or Livernois)but it seems like these are the two
top sources to choose from.

I thought our crank is already good for 600hp. They pistons, rods, and Main Bearings were the weak links

as long as you torqe everything the wright and make sure al clearances with the pistons/valves are good then thier really shouldnt be any prob. i would recomend getting the block cleaned and all the goodies but if your just keeping everything the same, you just want a stronget b/e then you should be fine

mustard05 05-10-2008 05:16 PM

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

i also beleive thier cranks 8 bolt so dont forget to buy a new flywheel

thanks mustard

i really just want to get in and then get out...

i want to install this kit and then just bolt the
heads back on and be done with it...

will i run into any unforeseen issues?

Dont forget to order it BALANCED:)

definately balanced [sm=smiley20.gif]

It's nice to see a guy that has a set. I've been debating the same thing myself. I know when I was younger I did those type of things all the time. More out of necessity than want, no money ='s fix it yourself or walk. I'm with you Hammeron, I don't want an all out beast but if I could get 550 to 600 rwhp that would be sweet. My car's pushing 493 with the 3.2 pulley with 10lbs of boost and I'm thinking if I could drop down a couple more pulley sizes I could be in that 550 plus range. I think the forged assembly would give me the peace of mind to do that. I assume your going to do away with the whipple and install a Saleen now. heh, heh just kidding. What was the ball park figures for the rotating assembly? And the other ? is did something happen to your motor or you just wanted to give this a go? Anyway good luck, I think you can do it and there are all kinds of help out there.

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

i would check with them and see what they say. i believe it said the kit chandes the displacement to 301. whichg makes it a 5.0. i would not recomend you to just put it in unless you have the block honed. then yes, as long as it balanced you could put it in.

as for the heads, what i do is get some playdoe and put a little bit on top of the piston.then lay the head on the block and then turn the crank until it turns all the way around. then take the head off and you can see it on the playdoe if the clearances are good enough. and extra 30 min doing this can save a lot of fustration in the future

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

also if your going to run stock head, i mean totaly stock, i wouldnt take it over 550rwhp. but also when i say that, hp limits on the heads are like hp limits on the block. some hold and some dont. now when i speack of the heads im refering to the springs mostly

well i think it's time for us (the c o l l e c t i v e) to put
a parts list together for DIYer's, that just want
piece of mind

What was the ball park figures for the rotating assembly?

for that kit plus balancing, is around $1900....of couse you have other
expenses involved....

And the other ? is did something happen to your motor or you just wanted to give this a go?

i just want to give it a go, got nothing to lose and everything
to gain

Anyway good luck, I think you can do it and there are all kinds of help out there.

thanks, with enough encouragement it just might happen

i think that is for the stroker kit....i'm looking
at the non stroker kit

3.54" Stroke Crankshaft

i really want plug and play for the most part

yeah, i was planning to do my clutch
at the same time, so a new steel
flywheel with 8 bolt is on the list

Hammeron that is exactly what im going to do. i just want to put forged parts in so i can get 550 rwhp. im going to wait till the winter. if u do it let us know how it turns out. 1 thing i would check on is putting better head gaskets on, just to be on the safe side...

mustanghobby 05-10-2008 06:26 PM

i forgot, your probably going to need an 8 rib kit

Hey Hammeron, do a Taco Bill type write up, with pics and daily updates, it would really be informative. It could save you some headaches if someone caught something that was wrong and with daily updates maybe some shortcuts could be documented as well. Again wish you all the luck.

the one for our engines and for our goals

hmm..I've built several 302's in the past but I'm weary of the ohc in these cars. You do raise questions though. Is there a handbook out there with the 3v breakdown in it?

blue, i really just want to install the
rotating assy, then bolt my heads
back on, no fuss no muss....

does anyone see a reason that this
plan won't work

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

I would not just throw that assemblyin there. You should have the block hot-tanked, freez plugs replaced, check the deck for trueness, balance rotating assembly and more. What about new head gaskets and ARP studs for the heads? Can you mic out the crank and main bearings/rod bearings to ensure proper clearance? If you know how to blueprint an engine then you should be okay.

I'm all for doing things myself, as you're aware, but even I would feel more comfortable installing a allready assembled short block, than to pull the guts out of my stock block and install new guts.;)

you can do it, were just saying it wont be as easy as you would like, and the 3,54 or whatever it is equals 301ci so you would have to get the block bored, dam i drunk

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

I say why not just buy the stock sized kit and have a mechanic install it? I have built many pushrod motors myself. The only concern I would have is setting up the tune, if a new tune is even required...It seems to me that if you pull the motor and just do a straight parts replacement it should be easy...pull the pan, then the main caps, pull the rod caps, pull the cam chains, lift the crank out, pull out the rods and pistons, I wouldnt even pull the heads if I didnt have to...then just put the new crank in....and no new tune should be required, I would use arp bolts....but beyond that I dont see any changes. I talked to my mechanic about it, he said if he does it all ie pull the motor, tear it down, install the kit, and install the motor it would be 800 to 1000$....But no way would I be afraid. Get a good book or a ford manual if need be...

You can put the pistons/rods in from the bottom? I've never seen that done before.

I've done a 302 from underneath but I don't know about the 4.6.

well i have the service manual and it's pretty detailed...

mustard05 05-11-2008 01:29 PM

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

yes, of coarse u pull it from the bottom. the rods are connected to the crank. regardless i would recomend taking the heads off anyway. you have to make sure you not going to get piston slap. even though you not changing displacent. its still recomended.

if your going to do a b/e build i would also recomend a new water pump as well.

MexGT 05-11-2008 01:53 PM

and a better oil pump?

thanks for the ideas guys, keep them

so far, nothing i have read in the

only thing i don't like, is all the little
special tools you may have to buy, for
one time use....

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

ham...i am just like you about not paying anyone too do work on my car but this one is dif. I have been too school for mechanic stuff and I would not do this swap without all the work needed...the block has to be worked on too to do it right. I am with moose in just dropping in a built short block so you know all the lower work has been done. you want to have the heads sent out to do the port and polishing..there is over 100 ponies that can be pulled out of the head work if done right from what i read.

mustard05 05-11-2008 02:30 PM

RE: Forged Rotating Kit - DIY?

well the block work can be done for 200 bucks give or take. as long as they the piston size and all that. as for the heads its all up to the individual. i wouldnt put on mostly stock heads, i would at least have the springs changed. but if you take your heads off them self. and take you head to a speacialist, they can build your head and port and polish it for 400 bucks give or take
