I Just had my Clutch replaced at 34k Miles. My hydrauclic throwout ended up going and that caused me to loose a lot of my clutch, which ended up killing the clutch early. My original throwout bearing was quiet and i never noticed it. The new one, is noisy when off of the clutch, but i dont see it as a problem. -Jon

When you say loose a lot of your clutch what do you mean? My clutch no longer feels as heavy as it did before and seems to have a small engaging area.

I have also had a "Slave unit" (throwout bearing) fail at 75K. The seal failed and spewed brake fluid over my clutch &pressure plate. I had to replace all three components and have my flywheel resurfaced. All of this happened within 8 days (500miles)fromwhen I first heard the whirringnoise of a "failed" throwout bearing. Once the noise starts I recommend replacing it. The dealership wanted $1200 to repair it and my extended warranty did not cover the repair. It cost me $900 at a local transmission shop to have it repaired.
To do the repair yourself is not that bad from what I was told after the fact. Of coarse that's saying a clutch replacement is easy in general. The slave clutch self bleeds after installation. After it was first repaired the pedal was a bit spongey. however, after a week or so it became normal again.
The seal is what goes bad. I suspect from heat. Going to and fromwork I run the engine over an hour each weekday. Howeverthe sealreally warped up, upon inspection after the repair.

Better qualityparts:
I was looking for a "better quality part" when I had my throwout bearing replaced. As of last year, I couldn't find such a thing. You can buy better everything but the throwout bearing. I had mine redone with LuK parts. But again, the throwout was still from Ford.
