Default Header Install shop or driveway?

Time for my next mod. Am dreading the install so I want to find out how long and how much you guys paid.

I have ready many threads on the topic but was surprised when I called brenspeed and they quoted 7 hours to install headers! WTF?? Two questions:

1. You did it yourself: How many hours?

2. Paid a shop to install? What did they charge you and how many hours did they quote?

FYI....I plan on getting long tubes with high flow cats. Maybe a mac prochamber but I dont know what it really does other than people saying it sounds great. Is it gonna be crazy nascar loud? Add some high flows too? http://www.brenspeed.com/pc2005.html

thx patrick

I used my girlfriend's garage to install mine and it took me around 18 hours spread over 3 days. About 6 hours of that was trying to get the header studs out that stuck in the cylinder head. If you have a garage and a weekend, it can be done. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing it in a driveway in the cold, especially if you don't have extra hands helping you out.

More like in my friends driveway with the wind and heat.......I live on Maui! Sweating on my back for 18 hours sounds like I need to hire somebody, and my friend will hate me for offering to help!! LOL Thanks for chiming in.

about 12-15 hrs over a weekend, when I do LT's should be quicker because we have done it once so we know better what to expect. I would have taken it to a shop w/o a garage to work in

If you can find a lift to use it will make your life substantially easier. I did mine with my cousin at Goodyear (he works there) after hours and it took about 3 hours. We also did the rest of my exhaust in that time.

Well I can't comment on long tubes but I did shorties in my garage on my back in about 5 hours. Really it wasn't too bad although my car has just 12,000 miles on it so none of the bolts were stuck. Depending on your mechanical capabilities I'd say long tubes can definitly be done in your garage/shop if your willing to put the time into it. If not, I would be looking for a shop. Good luck!

took me about 12 hours over the course of 2 days to get them in its really not hard if you have basic hand tools and plenty of patience!

Its a lot of laying on your back. You really learn to respect the work of Michelangelo after doing a header install without a lift. Its a job thats well worth paying for. If you plan on doing it yourself, use the OEM block studs and gaskets. Even Kooks recommends to use the OEM over aftermarket.

Mainly need to be able to raise the front of the car up enough to work in the headers from underneath. That's where a lift really helps. Otherwise, connecting things up to the headers means being under the car, and sure a lift helps, but for home/driveway, the hookups and any other parts can be put in w/o a lift.

FOR THOSE USING AMERICAN RACING HEADERS: what bolts did you use?

i got mine done by my shop but they only charged me $350 to do L/T headers, mid-pipe, and axle backs. of course this was back in early 05 and mine was the first S197 he got to work on so he gave me a damn good deal.
