Hi
Ive now got 400 miles on the GT, ive noticed that the engine is getting a lot looser very quickly. I was told by the dealer not to hold back and it was perfectly safe to drive hard from the showroom. This seems to be working very well.
What are the opinions about switching to synthetic, ive had real good luck in the past with mobil 1 and was planning to switch at the weekend.

I'd say leave the break-in oil until about 1000 miles, then run mobil1 forever! You'll be just fine.

After you change oil reset your MPG readout, if you have one. Seee if your MPG improves.
I reset mine with each fill up and when I can keep my right foot away from the floor I can almost avegage 16MPG for the tankful

I strongly advise to do that!
I ran her HARD from the git-go... at 1k miles I let the dealership chang my oil (Got 1 free oil change). at 2000 I changed to Mobil1. I know I should have done the first change sooner but it is hard to do with my schedule!
The difference was instantaneous. The engine runs noticeably quieter and cooler.. my MPG increased by 2mpg around town and 3 or 4 mpg on the highway.
AND - she seems to pull a little harder and smoother!

Somewhere between 1000 - 2000 miles you are safe to change to synthetic.
My suggestion: Mobil 1
Filters: Motorcraft, Wix / NAPA, Purolator (Do yourself a favor......STAY AWAY FROM FRAM. There is way too much "chatter" amongst oil nuts with bad stuff to say about their quality)
Mobil 1 will give you superior service for the life of your vehicle and its readily available at almost any retail / parts store. Less common but still excellent oils are AMSOIL , REDLINE, ROYAL PURPLE etc. I have always used the Mobil 1 products because I can basically find them "anywhere".

Hi Guys,
Don't be in such a hurrry to switch over to a pure synthetic based oil just yet, do some homework first. All engines need time break-in and the new all aluminum 3 valve engine in the '05 GT's is no different. Ask any experiences professional race engine builder and they will tell you that a seasoned block is better than a new "raw" block. The reason is that as an engine is going through its break-in the metals of the engine, in particular the friction surfaces, go through a slight change in molecular structure. If you change over to a pure synthetic too soon the engine will not complete this "seasoning" and you will have a harder time getting things like the rings to seat fully etc. The best research says that these important molecular changes have all happened by 10K-12K miles and that this is the optimum time to go to a pure synthetic based lubricant. To back this up anecdotally, the 10K-12K mileage number is also when most people will start to see their engines run their best and produce the highest torque, HP and milage numbers.
Please note that this opinion may only be good for a pure synthetic based oil, NOT petroleum based synthetic blends as are almost all of the "synthitic" oils out there. BTW, Mobil 1 is probably the best pure synthetic based oil for street vehicles today IMO.

F1fan, where did you get your information on how long to wait before changing to synthetic motor oil? Is there information online which I could read?
