Default Alternator slow return to idle

Hello,

I always get my answers on this forum so I rarely start a thread but here's something I couldn't find.

I'm having trouble with my 2007 GT for past couple of days. I get "Check charging system" error and the battery voltage fluctuates if I roll down my windows and turn on my A/C. The weird thing is after downtime of 8 hours or so my battery is completely charged. Also, if I rev my car to around 4000 rpm and shut it down quickly, I can hear alternator slowing down and it takes around 5 sec. It's so loud that I can hear it in the cabin.

Do you guys think issue is with the alternator or anything else could be wrong? I am a DIY kind of guy and wanted to take y'all's suggestions and fix the issue before heading to a garage. I replaced my battery and battery terminals last month.

Thanks,

A

if you need to replace the alt, get one for a 2010 model in auto or manual, whichever you have. these alts have a clutch pulley on them so they freewheel. I bet what your hearing upon shutdown is your cooling fan, mine is loudish as well. good luck

The OEM '05-'09 alternators also have a clutch pulley so yours may have worn pulley bearings. The best way to find out is to remove the drivebelt and spin the alternator pulley by hand to see if it makes any unusual noises.

Had the "Check Charging System" issue and it killed a battery in my GT. Weird **** would happen, like windows not resetting to their closed position after opening and closing the door, lights flickering, poor idle, etc.

I went with a PA Performance alternator through AmericanMuscle with the Power Wire upgrade kit (you'll want it for the higher amps). Worked like a charm. My interior cabin lights actually flicker a bit at night because now they glow brighter than before and it seems like the module powering them is trying to keep their voltage down, lol.
