You could go to Abita on your way to New Orleans and tour the beer factory, this time of year is great because they're doing their Strawberry Harvest beer right now, and they only do it for a few months.

Why wouldn't you want to go to New Orleans, it's a great place to visit, tons of stuff to do. The best way to do it is to go there with an open mind and a willingness to experience new things. Don't believe all the hype about the crime, it's there, but only in the bad parts of town, which tourist can usually only get to by being retarded.
