Default Tires?????

Probably a question that all of us ponder....wider wheels w/ street tires or factory size summer tires. Seems like a give and take. I ain't hooking at the track with the 4.10s, so a set of 245 Nitto 555 summer tires seems like a good idea. But a set of wider wheels and street tires in the rear would probably hook better than stock 245s and look much better. Also, how wide is possible in the rear w/o any rubbing...315s? Any help will do....thanks!

Depends on how low you are and what not. I don't think many people have problems with 315s in the rear, unless they're slammed. I'd go with some wider wheels and fatter meats in the rear. Hook a little better and it just looks badass. That's what I'm going to do when I can afford them!

Thanks for the feedback, broham. I see what you're saying about the fatter meats with a little better traction and looking badass at the same time. I think I'll go that route. I've read some guys talking about 10 1/2 in. wheels, guess I'll need to buy some of those too but I've also read the nice looking deep dish wheels are hard to come by.

I would rather have a stickier tire than wider.

The traction has to do a lot with the compound not necessarily the width.

I would get something sticker than the 555 to be honest if you want to use your gears to their fullest. I would go for a DR or something close to it if you are into dragging.

I wasn't happy with the 555's traction much at all and I have stock gearing.

hows the weather where you are and what type of driving/racing you do?

i just got my Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs on and i tell you what, even though they are 245/45's the compound on them is extremely sticky! i tried kicking my mach 1 sideways in a HEAVY downpour and all i got was wheel hop. i cant wait until its 70 somethin degress and dry! ive had these tires on for 40-80 miles and im completely impressed already. only $139 a tire from tirerack.

I agree with you on getting a stickier tire, but I'm just trying to kill two birds with one stone by getting a daily driver tire that would grip a little better. If I can convince my better half to let me I'm going to get another set of wheels with some 555R DRs for whenever I go to the track.

If you are getting a tire for the track only then don't get a Nitto. Look into MT.

I consider the 555R good for daily driving but that it me. They should last you 10k+ miles.

Does MT make a good sticky drag radial that is DOT approved that can be driven to the track like the 555R?

They do. It is a DR like the Nitto. It won't last as long but it will be much more grippy for the track.

Do you have 31 spline hardened axles? If you don't, I would think twice before putting on MT drag radials, or any drag radial with 4.10 gears! Those 28 spline stock axles will snap faster than you can say Mickey Thompson!
