PC gamers

I used to play PC games and then moved to console games and now I don't have time for either. I wish I did. When I do have free time, it goes to other hobbies now haha.

I think that the draw to console gaming is the fact that you do not need to upgrade your system in order to handle every game. The average person is running your "average" computer with a lackluster video card (if its not integrated) and lackluster sound. The console allows any game to be played while avoiding this.

Asus P5Q-Pro motherboard - $70 used these days
Intel Core 2 Duo E-5200 @3.5GHZ - $50 used
4GB of G.Skill DDR2 800 ram - $40
EVGA 8800GT 512MB - $50 all day long on the used market.
Thermaltake toughpower 750W power supply - $60
Logitech headset - $30

I can run every game other than Crysis on the market at 1680x1050 with max settings and it will look better than my PS3/xbox 360 attached to my 1080P plasma TV.
Now, lets look my console.
PS3 Slim - $299 retail, most wont buy used, but I have seen them around $220.
Vizio 32" TV - $450
Samsung 5.1 1000W home theater - $200.

My PC can outperfom the consoles at almost half the price.

Actually, it's not that big a difference. Lets look at my system for instance.

To the average consumer, the console is an easier choice. You upgrade the console every 5 years and it will run any game made for it. You use a 4 year old average computer and you can't run anything.
I am not arguing which is better, I am just suggesting why the average person will choose a console.

both of you make great points. but the system you build above will play most games on medium settings it was my system till about 6 months ago.
the console has convenience on it's side, which is what MOST go for, but other than that it pretty much goes to teh wayside.

How many people update the hardware in their computer let alone build their own computers?

You definitely have me there. I have always built my computers, so it's much cheaper for me.
Every game that I have runs just fine maxed with my system.

Pretty popular parts. I like them because it's budget minded, but plays very well. I was running an E8400@ 4.05GHZ and a 3870x2 for a while, but the driver issues got old. Went to a single HD4850, then down to the 8800GT. Pretty happy for now. I will upgrade again once prices drop.
