Default Dammit...

Car starting making an odd whirring sound yesterday. Checked it out today, took a while to track down but the woodruff key on the blower snout shaft let go, letting the pulley slip on the shaft

Shaft itself looks ok, but the inside of the pulley was scored to hell by the remains of the snapped off key and will need to be replaced, and of course I'm going to need to get the key remains out of the shaft and find a fresh key somewhere.

Car is disabled until I can do that

Well, the #$%& broken woodruff key is out of the blower shaft. It was wedged in there tight, and there wasn't enough left of the part sticking out of the shaft to get any decent sort of grip on it. Ended up having to use dremel cutting disks to cut through the center until I could collapse it and pull the pieces out.

New key and pulley ordered, should be here ~thurs...

Well, the new pulley and key made it. I just finished painting the pulley. Will let it dry overnight and get it installed tomorrow.

It is really odd to shear a woodruff key. Was the pulley loose? Does the blower spin freely? I think that I would check it out closely to see why the key failed.

Agreed and already did a post mortem.

Blower spins freely. The last pulley appears to have had a key groove that wasn't snug enough. I believe that let the pulley rock back and forth a minute amount (the suface area on these shafts isn't really enough for the nut to do all the holding on it's own). That let things wear.
