I would sell it, buy a beater with the money, and then once you are more financially stable and able to afford repairs that might come your way buy another.

People will "ask" for anything these days and some people will "donate" to any cause.

I wouldn't call it a scam. Just someone wanting to take a shortcut (money) from anyone willing to 'donate'.
