I NEED HELP!! Im curently working on a 1978 mustang MACH 1 and need to remove the ignition cylinder but not sure quite how to go about it I was wondering if I could get any tips and tricks on how to get it out
Im probably too late to offer any help, since your thread is from April 2020,but if you still need help with it or if other Mustang owners stumble across this thread during a Google or this forum search,it will still help those individuals. If you've still got the key & if the ignition lock cylinder still rotates like normal, simply insert your key into the lock cylinder, turn it to the on/run position (not the start
position) locate the tiny hole in the portion of the column that houses the key lock cylinder. Find a paperclip or tiny piece of wire small enough to fit up into that hole, insert it until it bottoms out in the hole.Hold the paperclip in place while you pull outward (away from the column) on the lock cylinder and it should slide right out.Once you're ready to install a new key lock cylinder, insert the key into the new lock cylinder, turn it to the on/run
position, slide the lock cylinder into the column housing fully, turn the key to the off/lock position and the locking pin should drop into place, which prevents the lock cylinder from coming back out.
You're done.If you lost the key, you'll have to drill the tumblers out of the lock cylinder,by drilling right down through the center (where the key gets inserted) of the lock cylinder.Afterwards, insert a flathead screwdriver down into the hole, turn it to the on/run position, insert the paperclip into the column housing and pull the lock cylinder out of the housing.Installation is the same as previously mentioned.
