Do you think this would mean similar performance to 99-04 mustangs? They are pretty close specs.

Yes I would think so. Probably will pull pretty well down low like the PI 2v, as most modern turbo's have little to no lag.

OMG! A FOUR-CYLINDER IN A MUSTANG! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD! THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! THE MUSTANG IS A MUSCLE CAR!SKFSKFSKS!
Seriously people grow up. And for the 3rd time THE V8 IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE! The IRS is going to be needed to compete on the international market in terms of handling. the turbo 4-banger is also desirable internationally. 270HP/40MPG would be awesome and it would be a great fact to slap in the face of eco-wienies.
Justice-Need i remind you that the mustang, as has been stated, started with a 6cyl?

If you haven't driven one, I suggest you do. I think your opinion of the v6 will change.

Well shoot if it's the around the same base hp as a stock 04 GT but twice maybe triple the mpg's that's awsome news.

Have you driven the new v6??? Even though the "rated" horse power is slightly less than the 05 to 2010 gt, actual horse power ratings vary so much from car to car that the new v6 will easily hang with the GT's of previous years.

But I digress, it's the ecoboost 4 rumor-mill we're going on about;
The ecoboost should be marketed with 240 at least. 2.0 turbo's from competitors already get way more than 200 out of them. The ecoboost would have some more displacement to play with. I do wonder if the ecoboost engine is lighter than the V6. Low weight + decent power + rwd = nice value and perfect competitor against the upcoming toyo-subaru rwd coupe. If they can keep the price low. Hell, it might even get some young folk into mustangs instead of the imports. Win Win!

I have to disagree, while my 3.7L doesn't sound anywhere as good as my 5.0L or any other V8 Mustang, it does sound very nice in its own right.

Kudos to Ford if they do this. The Stang has been available with a huge variety of motors over the years, and the only really bad years were the mid 70s to early 80s. Having a pony car with options of a 250hp turbo four all the way up to a 500+hp blown eight is pretty awesome.
