Default A True Newbie

Ok, ever since I was a teenager I hated Mustangs. I didn't really care for Ford's much at all. Well, the other day me and my wife were on our way to Wal-Mart. As we went by the local "Chevy" dealer that had an '05 GT convertible parked on the curb. My wife got all excited and wanted to go look at it. I rolled my eyes, but as you know, to make her happy I went in. I'm waiting in my truck while she looks at it, and of course a salesman is on top of her instantly. He talks us into taking it for a test drive.... It was a 5 speed and she refuses to learn how to drive one, so I was forced to drive it while she rode......

Ok, I'll admit it, Mustangs are pretty sweet! Getting on the ramp for the highway, I took it up to about 4500rpm in 1st, shifted to 2nd and floored it. The car almost went sideways! I had to let off the gas. On the highway, I was cruising at 60mph, she said she wanted to see what they would do. I dropped it into 3rd and buried it. Went to 4th and I swear it seemed like only about 5sec since I was going 65, but I was going 120mph.

I'm in the process of deciding which one I want to buy for myself now!

I know absolutely nothing about Mustangs. I would like a little advice. I want something more than a GT. Would it be wiser financially to buy a GT and fix it up? Or just throw down for a Roush or Saleen?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Oh, I drive an '02 Dakota. 5.9L (for now). Pulley, K&N intake, performance module, and a few other mods. Truck runs good, never had it at the track though. So I have no clue what the specs are. I know it doesn't compare to that GT.

Welcome!!

So did she end up getting the 05 or did you guys tell them you'd wait on it?

If you're looking for a rare mustang, definitely go with the saleen or roush-- they're not as common but they do cost a pretty penny and they are more of a weekend car rather than a DD (although some people do use them for dailies)

A GT and all the goody mods would be cheaper and probably get you in the same range HP wise, if not more than the saleen/roush... but it wouldn't give you the looks and the rarity.

If you're looking for more info, try reading up on some of the threads in our Saleen/Roush tech section and the 2005-06 section, there's plenty of info to be had there.

do you want a new body style or would you take and old one, like 2000 or 2003? If you would take an old one, you could get a cobra and i think you would be satisfied. But if not, i would get a saleen, they look amazing!!!! Good luck!

I personally would buy a GT and mod it myself with the money you save, or look for a lightly used 03/04 Cobra

i would personally buy a 99-04 mach or cobra and mod it cause they are more rare then the 05s, they are a dime a dozen and dont look as good, plus the mach and cobra are both faster then the new ones

Wow, that puts you in the 1.5% of people who think the 99'-'04 mustangs look better than the new ones.

Thanks for the advice. I will more than likely keep my truck for the "daily driver." It's paid for, and has almost 100,000 miles. It's more valuable as that than trading it in for a few grand.

I like the new body style. I went and looked at the Roush yesterday. I liked the body style. But the performance didn't really warrant spending an extra 10k. But like you said, they are rare, and will more than likely hold their value better.

I'm in no hurry to buy one. I would like to get a new one if I can afford it. I've been working overtime for awhile, putting 2k/month back for a new car. I finally found what I want.
