Yes, you bought a very rare Mustang. There were 366 R Code Mustangs built in 1972. 336 Mach I's, such as yours, & 30 Sportroofs (non-Mach I). They are identical to the 1971 Boss 351 (approx. 1800 Boss 351s were produced), except for it has low compresion open chamber heads. Same 4 bolt main block, forged steel crank, forged pistons, stronger rods, solid lifter cam, aluminum spredbore intake, dual point distributor, rev limiter, etc. All came with a mandatory4 speed. The 05 in your VIN indicates that your car is a Mach I and although you have the correct hood & paint, it is missing the Mach I stripe kit. Itwould be equipped with a 351 Cleveland, which is considered a small block. But when comparing in to a 351 Windsor, side by side, the Cleveland looks like a big block. Hope this helps. Congratulations!

i'm not sure about the 72's, but some of the 73's had a 351 cleveland cobra jet, was only about 2500 made, and even fewer that had 4speeds, myself and the old man jsut bought one about 2 months ago. engine codes match the vin, so we got lucky, only paid 1500 for her. obviously needs alot of work though, but great looking car, can't wait to get ours to that point.

I own one also. Grabber blue with Argent strips.
Thereare only 336 mach 1s, very rare.
1972 R codes were de-tuned '71 351 BOSS motors. Compression down to 9.6 and other head mods.
Bottom end is the same. HP was not that much lower than the BOSS but looks like it due to the new 1972 at the rear wheel measurements vs. flywheel measurements in 1971.
These cars came with no AC and I believe only 4 spds.
Rear ends were only 3.91 posi.
Ford had 500 1971 Boss motors left in 72. 366 were put in mustangs, the balance in Cougars.
The production ran out March/April .
This was fords last "made for racing" muscle car of the '73-down cars.
This will be thesixth R code I have found over the three years I have owned mine.
There is a gentleman in Germany that collects them. He has three and is interested in mine once its ready for sale.
Mine is being concourse restored to go on the auction block sometime next year.
Value: According to cars that matter manual R code 72s are worh 40% higher than a normal Mach1.
Around $40K.
One did not sell on Ebay but got up to $35,600.00. Probably the reserve was $40K but dont know for sure. It was a #2 restore IMO, not really a top notch rotisserie restore.
Feel free to email me anytime.
