Welcome to the forum Megan! If the check engine light is on and solid and the car appears to run fine then it has to do with the emissions on the car and most likely a O2 sensor(s) that no longer works. On my DD I have been driving the car with that light on for 5 yrs and refused to pay 200 bucks for 2 O2 sensors that monitor emmisions. The car is old and we have no emission checks in Michigan. If you do in AZ then I would get the car looked into. If there is an autozone or Oreileys auto parts in the area have them hook up a scanner tool into the OBD port and see what code was thrown when the light came on. Sometimes its bad gas or the fuel cap was not on right or tight enough after fueling up the beast. If its the gas cap then it will turn off on its own after a couple of fill ups. If the check engine light is flashing the car will not run right and shut her down and call a tow truck to the nearest repair shop as that indicates potential big problems with the motor- hope it helps

Welcome to MF! Hopefully your check engine light isn't anything major. Don't be afraid to ask questions, if you can't find your answers when you do a search on the forum then by all means ask away! We are all here to help.
