Hello from California. =)
Hello everyone. Earlier this month, I ordered my new 2011 Mustang. I have been reading up on 'stangs and I came across these forums. Seems like an awesome community, so I thought I would join. I haven't received my mustang yet. In fact, it has been 23 days since my order went in, and I still don't have a build date. My dealer, however, says that my car is in the batch in the front of the line next to be built. I won't complain, since its almost done... but most of all, since he sold me the car for only $300 over dealer invoice. =)
For the last 5 years, I have driven a BMW. When I first bought it, I thought I was getting an ultimate driving machine. In many ways, this car has performed very well. However, in many ways, this car has been a huge disappointment. It has 135,000 miles on it and has already cost almost as much as $10,000 in maintenance and repairs. Almost immediately after 60,000 miles when the warranty ended, the air conditioner failed, part of the engine started to break down, brake pads went too quickly, and I had many problems with maintenance and cost. To be fair about the brakes, they are by far the best brakes I have ever had. They go quickly and cost a lot, but they have stopping power. Engine repairs and A/C repairs on a BMW after a little over 60,000 miles??? Terrible. On our family farm, we drive nothing but Ford trucks. The longest we have kept a truck before selling it is 350,000 miles. And in the last 30 years, we have NEVER HAD A SINGLE ENGINE PROBLEM.
I was talking to my dad, and he suggested that I test drive a Mustang in deciding for my next car. Over his life time, he has owned 4 mustangs. He had one from the 1970s when he was a teenager, one from the 1980s, one from the 1990s, and a 2003 Saleen which he gave to my brother. Other than maintenance and 1-2 clutches per car (he always drives manual), he has never had any problems.
So I began by searching online for Mustangs. (back in February btw) I read all about the 2010, and started to get more and more attracted to the idea of getting one. Then I stumbled across an article for the 2011 Mustang. I was amazed by all the new stuff Ford had done in the new year... so I decided to wait several months for a test drive. Fast forward to the end of May. I went down and test drove a 2011 'stang. Although I didn't admit this to the dealer, I was almost sold when I started up the GT. He didn't even card me when we test drove it, or ask me to wait for me to drive it off of the lot. He just tossed me the keys and said, "Let it rip." During the test drive, he made sure to let me drive it as aggressively as I wanted... assuring me that it was ok to push it to its limits. >
When I asked him about the brakes, he told me to stomp them as hard as I could. Comparing them to my BMW, they felt just as good. The only difference was not stopping power, but a slight amount of control. When I say slight, I mean ultra slight. The suspension was equal to or better.
I was sold. This car was powerful, well-built, sturdy, and available with lots of options.
I am looking forward to my next 5 years with this car. (Company is buying and I keep for 5 years) From everything that I hear, from the experience of my dad, from the experience of Ford on our farm, and from what I read on these forums, I look forward to having lots of fun with this car... and hopefully nothing disappointing. =)
