New to the forums..
I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself and say thanks. My name is Matt and ive recently been lurking on the boards soaking up info to help me get my 65 Mustang back on the road.
I bought the car 16+ years ago when i was 17 years old.It was a very nice car.65 Coupe A code with a 289 4bbl carb, front disks,p/s with dealer installed ford a/c.It also came with deluxe black interior and started out green.I drove the car until i was 21 and i drove it HARD.Being young and not knowing how to actually work on the car it started to have issues. Those issues coupled with work, kids and marriage was the reason it was parked, covered and kinda forgotten about.Occasionally i would pull it out mess with it but never had the actual money to do what needed to be done.About 3 months i came home from work and found my oldest son who is 13 had the cover off and the hood up and started asking questions about what it would take to get it running again so the plan was born.We will work on it together so we can BOTH learn how to fix and maintain a classic mustang and then he can have it when he graduates from H.S.
We started out by draining all fluids and adding new fuel, oil and filters. We then put on a a modest Edelbrock 500 carb.Changed the points to a Petronix system with new coil.Changed plugs wire and a bad fuel pump.Low and behold she fired up on the first turn of the key.Amazing.We then drove her to a friends house where he showed us how to tune the carb,do the timing. He also checked the compression and said all was good.Yeah!
Our next step is to completely redo both the front and rear suspension.Should be interesting.
Our overall plan for the car is to make it as safe as possible and to not go completely overboard on engine mods and HP.I would like to have my son around for a few years after he gets the car if you know what i mean.I told him he can do as he wishes with the exterior i.e. paint/wheels and such but he is to LEAVE the original black Pony interior ALONE...Its why i fell in love with car to begin with.He has very interesting ideas as to what to do with the rest.
Wow...what a long post. Can you tell im excited?Just so you guys know everything i did so far i read about it here first before attempting it on my car.Great information on these boards thank you.Sorry for the super long post.Heres a picture of the car.Tomorrow i will post picture of the engine and interior.
