Default 1964 1/2 Generator problem

I'm new here so please bare with me.....My GEN light stays on while the car is turned off. As soon as I start the engine, it turns off. I was having a few small issues so I went a head and installed a new voltage regulator, rebuilt the generator and also replace the starter solenoid. Everything seems to be working fine, except the GEN light on the dash stays on while the engine is not running. The only way to turn it off is to unhook the negative battery cable. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with the older stang's anymore, but is this a new problem you just noticed? Did the light turn off after a few seconds before with the ignition on but not running? What condition is your battery? I'm assuming that light should go on anytime voltage drops below a set limit, 12 volts ???

Otherwise you can post this question in the tech section, there's some knowledgeable guys here that will help you out more than I can. Good luck

It is a new problem. Initially the tail lights were not working so I started looking around under the hood. I had it running with the hood up trying to look for a problem with the tail lights. When I shut it off I saw a small amount of smoke coming from the generator and that is when the light started staying on when the engine was off. So I though installing a new voltage regulator and rebuilding the generator would take care of the issue. Battery seems to be in good shape....I cleaned both terminals when I removed the battery to perform the maint. The GEN light stays on as long as the battery is still connected.
