Quiet down the exhaust
The previous owner of my '03 Mustang GT installed Flowmasters and an O/R h-pipe. The exhaust setup sounds awesome, but its just waaaaay too loud, especially at night. Everyone who rides in my car always comments on how extremely loud the exhaust is. What do I need to do to reduce the noise? Can I just replace the mufflers, or do I need to swap out the whole system? I'm new to exhausts, so if someone could also explain how the h-pipe affects the overall sound, I'd be grateful.
Keep in mind... I don't want to castrate my pony, I just need to tame it...

you could always put in a h-pipe with cats and this way you can pass emissions and it will quiet it down alot. flowmasters aren't all too loud so i wouldn't replace them because theres not many mufflers out there that will be quieter. what series flowmaster muffler do you have anyways? i would just replace the h-pipe with one with high flow cats or put the stocker on there. he must still have it if he took it out and put the off road one in.
if i were you i would keep it the way it is. mustangs are suppose to sound the *****

So this is what I did. I kept the X pipe and replaced the Mac Cat back with MagnaFlow Cat back, (not magnapacks!) that did the trick. It is just a tad louder than stock. The only hit I took was on dyno. I lost 4 whp. But it was worth it. Oh, the MagnaFlow Catback is all stainless steel and is expensive -- I paid $510.
I had the same problem on my 94 GT. I had BBK shorty headers, an O/R Prochamber, and 40 series Flows, and I couldn't hear myself think much less have a phone conversation while driving.
I replaced only the mufflers and it made a hell of a difference. I bought the Magnaflow XL turbo mufflers. They are three chambered and def. done drone like the Flows did. I would recommend the same mufflers to anyone.
