Default h-pipes

i recently put the new flowmaster super 40s on my just about stock 86 GT and they just dont sound as good as i thought they would... ive been thinking about putting on an o/r h or x pipe... whats the difference between the 2... any suggestions for good sound and performance?

After researching for my exhaust swap, I am pretty sure that you would not want to use an X pipe with flowmasters since they are chambered. I believe the general view around here is that an H pipe gives a little more torque in the lower rpm ranges while an X pipe gives a slightly better H.P. increase overall.

Also the H pipe is supposed to give an old muscle car sound while the X pipe gives more of an Indy car sound. But that also depends on the type of muffler it's paired with.

I do believe your 86 gt's exhaust goes out of the cats, into a Y pipe, and duals back out. Until you ditch the Y pipe for straight pipes, your car will sound more timid. Straight pipes with an H pipe will be a HUGE improvment.

you can buy a kit from summit for like 50 bucks to make one. it isnt that hard either. all you need to do is cut the stock one and clamp (or weld) the h-pipe in place. i think jegs has the same thing also. but if you want to upgrade to 2.5", i think pace setter sells the cheapest (price) one. other than that, there is BBK, MAC (dont buy MAC, bad quality), and TONS of others. you will save yourself about $150 if you do the kit from Summit though

and how do you like the super 40 series mufflers????? im thinkin about putting them on my (future) stang.

...the brand of h pipe will hardly matter, the biggie for you is getting rid of the Y pipe and getting straight pipes

If you want a H pipe, get the MRT catted H pipe...has high flow cats and is supposed to be real good.

you'll need a double hump x-member if you are going to run dual exhaust

...Justin is exactly right, a double-hump cross-member is needed.
