Default 10 sec car

Hello

I recently bought a 69 fb, it turns out that its not the original motor or transmission thats in it, it has changed colour and the interior has been upgraded to a deluxe model, however thats not the interior thats on the VIN.

So seeing that I cant very well restore it to "original" I have decided to make it into a 10 sec 1/4 mile street car.

Now....this is my first "muschle" car so I was wondering how much rwhp I need (in theory) to be able to run 10 sec laps, I will deal with traction/suspension/transmission second.

So

Question nr:

1. minimum amount of rwhp
2. transmission, is there a transmission that "everyone" uses or agrees upon is the best
3. how much hp does my 4 speed manual tranny take (C4 I belive), and how much abuse/hp can my 9" rear end take.

Basically the idea is to set it on a some stands and rip it to bits, I have some cash set away for this project and then just throw money at it over time to make it into a 10 sec car, Id really like to know what rwhp is needed so I dont get a engine solution that will be to weak, but Id allso like to be able to drive it on the street.

Any help here is good as Im just into my first mustang

The rwhp required to run 10s will be directly affected by the weight it's taking down the track with it. Your car is larger and all steel. It will take a little more than these 87-93 cars unless you truely plan on gutting the car. I think you should shoot for a minimum of 500rwhp. It can be done with less, but 500rwhp is a nice number and should get you there without requireing too much effort in making it an all out race car.

By the time guys are in the 10s, a good majority have switched to an automatic. They most likely use a C4 (or even a Chevy TH400 in some cases) if they want to see a fair amount of street time. Past that, it's a powerglide. There are guys still rowing gears with a Tremec or G-Force T5, but they are pretty die hard to have not switched over to an auto yet. Autos are just a lot more user friendly at that level.

A C4 is a 3 speed auto. A properly built 9" will take worlds of power.

Put a 408 stroker in her with a 150+ shot of N2O an you'll get what youre lookin for... A 9" rear end will handle it... trannys... I dunno if a tremec will fit or not...

a ford 9" is the rear-end of choice for all drag cars, you will see them for sale and bought by every guy wanting to go fast, they are the best.

i would rebuild the rear, and do something like 3.89-4.00 gears , keeping the c4 you'll want to leave a few r's for cruising.

the c4 is one of the best trannies you can have too....they are ok stock, but look to do redline clutches, 3200-3500 stall converter (4000+ if your not planning on cruising too much, and mostly track time)

i would agree on the 500 hp figure, you could stroke your current motor(i'm assuming it's a 351w), w/ a nice set of aluminum heads ported nicely, valve job, good intake, and fresh carb, then spray about 150 on it.

that should get you a 10 second pass , if it doesn't , bump the jets til you get it.
