Boost problem?
i have a 89 probe GT that is turbo charged...and when i give it full throttle and the turbo charger kicks in, i get this extremely LOUD blowing sound...and as soon as i let off it smells horrible like exhaust or burning something...and i just wanted to see if any of you guys could help me
thanks
thanks
k heres what happend...i was drivin around kinda drivin hard steppin on it and all a sudden this huge *** noise happens...like i dont know a PSSSHT thingy and i didnt know what it was and i kinda thought my radio did soemthin but then it kept doin it and it is constant but its really loud when i kick the turbo in.. and when its idling i can put in the clutch and it will stop hissing...
i do not know much about forced induction..so i dont know if the exhaust smell is part of the turbo or if i F*cked somethin up drivin too...
but the sound seems to be comming by the front drivers wheel...but it also kinda sounds like it right by the throttle body

hard to tell by your description. does it still run alright? if so then it's not a boost leak (intake side)....check where the downpipe meets the turbine housing. it might have come loose or blew out the gasket
i drove it home at 55-60 mph fine..no problems what so ever....it kinda sounds different...louder..and of course the the air sound...but when i push in the clutch the air sound stops...so i dont know
Sounds like you have 2 different problems, one being in the transmission & being in your exhaust. I think a part on your clutch assembly may need replaced, but i'm not too sure how they are set up on the 1st gen probes. That smell you are getting isn't from the turbo it's because your cats need replaced, with what is up to you either with another one or a testpipe that will fix the smell & most likely the sound aswell.
I'd replace the cat first & see if you still have the sound when you let off the clutch.
The loud blowing sound is either coming from right after the turbo on the hot side or right before it on the compressor side.
If you have moved anything around on the intake like a cold air intake or moving the filter closer to the turbocharger it will cause that noise
On the exhaust side this could also come from the clogged cat so like i said, replace it first if it doesn't fix the problem check for exhaust leaks

my auto shop teacher said one thing sounds like a throw out bearing? (if so about how much would this cost..and then how much would it cost with serivice?) and one guy said my exhaust manifold came loose..i have not done anything to the intake..it is stock...the previous owner put a drop in filter in it..? and another guy said i have a boost leak is this what u are sayin i have?

have your autoshop class work on it for a project. I agree with the clutch and a leak on the hot side of the turbo. have you noticed a corresponding loss in power? sorry if you already said that. if you are stinkin, cats may be an issue.
haha...sorry but there aint no way im leavin my car in our auto shop..
stuff "mystriously" gets broken little objects get put into things like a carb or soemthing... what do you mean by corresponding power?

He means a loss in power since before it started making the sound.
The throwout bearing is what i'm talking about, but I'm not sure how they have those positioned on the first generation probes. It is the part that presses against the fingers on your pressure plate. You can buy it here & yes, there is a VERY good possibility that it is what's wrong with the clutch assembly.

If your exhaust manifold is loose then that is a different problem. Did he actually look at it?
In any case You should look at the exhaust AFTER the turbo for any holes or leaks. Your exhaust could be fine with no leaks in it, a clogged catalytic converter will make the same thing happen. I just ran straight pipes with no cats on my v6 probe, but that was to cut down on the cost of twin turboing it. Out of the 5 single kits I've made only one with a cat, the guy said he wanted one on there. You can take yours off if you don't have emission checks.
You could have someone rev your car up while you listen for where the sound is coming from. I don't think there is possible that you have a leak on the intake side, but it would most likely be before the meter & close to the turbo. I have never seen a small leak on the inside though, most cases have been a hose blown entirely off.
