Buying a used Vortech
Anybody have any tips on what to look out for when buying a used Vortech S trim SQ? We were looking at one this weekend for my brothers mustang. The only things i knew to look for was spin it and make sure there arent any crazy wierd sounds and make sure the impeller isnt damaged. Anything else?
i bought my used v2 sight, unseen. Maybe not a good idea, but it turned out fine. If there is no shaft play, and the impeller looks good, then should be ok. What i would suggest, is go onto Vortech's web site and go under "support" and get a parts list that comes with the blower, it will tell you everything you should have. I ended up having to buy alot of parts for it, oil fitting, discharge tube was ginked up, hoses and stuff. You could probably buy hoses, grommets, clamps yourself, but i just went ahead and did it from vortech to make sure i got the right stuff, and it actually wasnt that expensive. Do you get injectors, maf, iat relocator, fuel pump, belt that you will need? If you want to do a pulley swap, do it before you put it inthe car. Is it the right bracket? yadda.
I just sold my other brand new kit on e-bay for $2,800. I have been noticing an awful lot of zero feedback people selling mustang superchargers on there though, so watch out for that. Probably the best way to go is be patient and find one within a days drive for you.
Also, a lot of people do sell brand new kits. They buy it, and realize their in over their head and sell it. In my case, I ended up with 2 blower kits. There may be a lot of little parts missing that can nickle and dime you to death...
My suggestion would be buy a brand new kit off ebay from someone who bought it, then decided they didn't want to put it on their car.

I got my blower off Ebay and it was great! All you need to do is get the serial number off the Vortech head unit. You then call vortech and ask them if the blower has ever been in for service or not. They can tell you exactly how old is, when it was built/sold etc... Turns out, mine was built in 2000, sold in 2001, and it came in just last year to have new seals and bearings put in! So its a 6 year old head unit, but it has been rebuilt and it runs great! It looks brand new also! Im just telling people around town that its a new kit and I paid 3500 for it!
You should see their faces!
I ended up paying $750 for the head unit, bracket, discharge tube, intake, boost gauge/pod, and bypass valve from a guy in florida.... I got the parts list off the vortech website and started piecing it together. I found all the bolts/washers at the harware store. Then I ordered the oil drain, feed, bolt spacer, and that ghey($52) 2.8 inch pulley from a company called Superchargers online. After that I got the belt, hose clamps, hose sleeves, and tools from the parts store. Finally I took a trip down the road to Delk performance and picked up the air filter, injectors, MAF, and other tidbits for cheap cause they were used! Got the computer chip for $75 and had it reburned.
So in total I spent around $1500 for everything to get the charger on my car. Definately go this route if you can. Im loving it right now!
