Default 87 Octane and SC

I have been thinking of tuning my car for 87 while not boosted and using my water/meth injection to prevent detonation while boosted. I would think this should work for the boost level I am running (12psi w intercooler).

Then I could run any cheap gas and should even have a power advantage if I can run the 87 without detonantion.

Anyone doing this?

It would be unbelievably stupid to run 87 octane.

I guess my question is... if you don't want to pay the extra $2 - $3 extra per tank of gas, then what are you doing with an expensive, new, V8 Mustang with water / methanol injection and an expensive Supercharger?

Well the good news is that he can buy a new engine using the money he saved from buying the cheap gas!

I figured that would be the responce, but think about it for a minute.

How many of you think it's a waste to put 93 in a stock stang? Not only is there no benefit, but performance can actually be worse because of the slower burning fuel.

When boost is introduced with no other way to prevent detonation, octane must be increased and timing must be pulled.

With the use of water/meth injection, however, that is not the case, because it effectively increases the octane.

As long as the effective octane can be raised enough to prevent detonation, and it looks to me like it can, then running a higher octane gas than is needed is no more stupid than putting 93 in a stock stang when it isn't needed.

The water/meth can be used up to around 20psi and I'm not running anywhere close to that, plus I'm already intercooled to start with.

At 12psi I already have to use the water/meth when I am on boost, so it's not like I would be doing anything different anyway.

It's not that I'm too cheap to by 93, I just don't see uselessly wasting money that could go for better purposes.

Nice creative thinking, but you dunno what your talking about...

You cant use 87 so dont even try. You wont find anyone to tune the car on 87 octane if they know what theyre doing. 12psi of boost!? You dont think thats very much?! [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]
