Gears going this week HELP PLEASE
The local auto shop diagnosed the rattle through my linkage as somthing broken in my rear end gears and said that i was a common problem with the ford rear end it the GTs. ANYWAYS my dad said he'd pay to replace my rearend gears.
HAPPY ME. But i have to get it done in the next few days cause i leave for college in like a week. If i change to 3.83's in the process would i also have to reprogram my computer? What brand of gears are the best? What does FFRP stand for and what is it? Any other advise sounds good too. I've already decided on the 3.83's I need to keep it practical. AND BtW my car is a 2000 GT 5spd.

First of all the gear choices you will be looking at are 3.73s adn 4.10s. The 3.73s are better for 5 speeds and most autos use 4.10s. Even tho you could use 4.10s I recommend 3.73s. Next, since you are a 2000 you will need a tuner ( diablo, sct, etc..) to change your rearend gear ratio in your computer to make your speedometer read correctly. If you do not use a tuner to change the setting in your computer the only thing that will happen is your speedo will be WAY off and useless, so get that done. It is not FFRP, it is FRPP and it stands for Ford Racing Performance Parts. Good brands of gears are FRPP or Motive Gears. Good luck!
Thanks. I just think its going to be hard to convince him on the change to the 3.73's cause they will
"make it go faster" and parents are going to be gay about stuff like that. Especially it i have to buy another 400$ tuner to go with it. He'd just want to change to the stock 3.55's, but what a waste if i'm going to change them out anyways? They buy me a GT mustang and tell me not to modify it? If i'm going to get a ticket the car has plenty to make it happen how it is. But thanks for the help and i'll post back when i figure out what the final solution is.

Don't listen to bikeboy, you don't need to get a tuner.....you could just get a speedometer recalibrater. Here's one: http://www.americanmuscle.com/speedc...r-oil-kit.html There are probably others. Maybe cheaper. But I just did business with AM and their shipping is ridiculously fast and service is great. I'm sure someone else will chip in with their opinion on good options. Anyway, the point here is that you don't need to spend an additionaly $400 if you don't want to.
Oh, and it is only $99 separate if you have the gears already.

I went by the local shop and talked to my mechanic yesterday, we said that the shop always uses the FRPP gears and that the gears alone would be about $500 from them + money for the install. Are these gears on the link you sent me the same as the gears he's talking about? Just want to make sure i'm actually getting the FRPP since that is what they are most comfortable with (since with gears the installation is just as important as the gearing itself), and that is the set that i want to go with.
thanks, sorry i'm so clueless, never looked into getting gears done and now it HAS to be done in like 2 weeks.

LOL, well your mechanic sounds like a thief. And by that I mean he might be stealing your money. Find a new one. http://www.americanmuscle.com/fopege3ra1.html 3.73 gears from FRPP for $179......kinda makes me wonder what else he's overcharged youfor.....Gears should be no more than $200 at most, then installation should take only a couple hours at $100/hr AT MOST. I got quoted 4 hours to install the same gearsAND a traction lock at $85/hour. You really should call around and find a different mechanic...there has been tons of posts on installation costs and most of the guys here have paid between $200 and $400 for the installation, and NO ONE has paid $500 for gears. For that much you can get the gears, t-loc (which you might wanna look into by the way) and the oil and installation kit.....or you could get the gears, oil, and tuner. Either way your mechanic is trying to screw you over.
